Dear..
One "drive" follows another
on the Home Front, and this
week the salvage paper drive is
being completed and plans be
ing laid for the 1945 campaign
to raise funds for the Infantile
Paralysis Foundation. One car
load of scrap paper was shipped
last week and another Is being
prepared this week, with school
children of the entire county
appearing at school each morn
ing loaded down with old mag
azines, newspapers and card
board. Bill Grenbemer is again
chairman of the "polio" cam
paign and already a number of
benefits have been planned.
Final figures on tire last war
loan drive have been released
showing that Jackson county ex
ceeded its quota on all issues.
Total sales were over $3,000,
000. Final reports of the Chamber
of Commerce post-war fact-finding
committee have been made
indicating the probable amounts
that will be expended by public
agencies, industry, farmers and
others in the immediate years
after the war and indicating
probable trends for this county.
It is anticipated that such agen
cies as the federal and state
highway commissions and the
i forest services will spend large
turns when labor and materials
can be obtained and that busi
ness men, farmers and home
owners will be in the market
for equipment and machinery.
Practically everyone contacted
when the surveys were made
said they wanted to buy a new
car as soon as possible.

Barber's
Observations
Reminiscent of Hillside ex
periences is that which we are
now going through In the home
in which I'm staying. For the
Littlest Lad's father got him a
dog. A silkey-eared, blonde,
brown-eyed Cocker spaniel pup;
a pup only time and stern meas
ures will convert to the ways of
polite society. In short, a pup
which is not yet "house broke."
The little dog was picked up
on the streets by the humane
society and after being duly ad
vertised and no owner appear
ing to claim it, it was sold to
Littlest Lad's dad. The pup was
then bathed, defleaed and pre
sented to the boy when he re
turned from kindergarten.
Judged by the actions of both
dog and boy, one would have
thought they were being re
united after a long separation
instead of meeting for the first
time. Both were seized with a
joyous hysteria and flung them-

The next day saw the start of
Sandy's education in the matter
ot certain personal habits. When
dark and dampish spots appear
ed on the living room rug,
Sandy's nose was introduced to
them with some violence and his
little teehiney paddled. You'd
have thought the little dog was
being torn limb from limb, the
way he howled. But it was the
boy who really suffered. He ac
cepted the dog's shrieks at their
face value and the streaming
eyes in the little grief-distorted
face hurt the mother more than
she had hurt the dog. The' pup,
sensing an ally, redoubled his
shrieks and rolled hypocritical
eyes of suffering at the lad.
I should have known better,
but I didn't, so I put In my oar
and told the boy his mother
hadn't slapped the pup' hard
enough to hurt a flea.-The pup
understood ana his eyes prom
ised he'd get even. He did. To
night,. some clippings left on my
bedroom floor were strangely
wettlsh. A brown and insolent
eye half hidden by a blonde and
silken ear peered around the
door jamb, then disappeared in
scratchy-toed haste. The pup was
avenged.
