there is a law

Dr. Brady . presence of a
husband. This seems odd, in
view of the fact that in this
very hospital they admit an en

the delivery of babies. Just
what is so unsanitary about a
husband, I'd like to know.
( ... Signed)
Well, sergeant, it is virtually
established as correct Yankee
custom than an expectant father
should play the role of nincom
poop by the people who run the
hospital.'
The "unsanitary"' dodge is
just a little joke. Of course a
bevy of young ladies who are
studying nursing is Just as sani
tary as a husband in the deliv
ery room or in the operating
room. That's eyewash. The
main reason why shady institu
tions prefer to exclude husbands
is, of course, their fear that
husband might happen to know
enough to resent some of the
frightful . breaches of asepsis
that occur in such Institutions.
What the poor boob' husband
does not see will bring no grief
to the hospital.
I'm sorry I cannot tell readers
which hospitals permit hus
bands to remain at the bedside,
if the patient so desires. But I
can tell the world that there is
no law about this and no board
of health regulation. It Is wholly
a scheme designed to protect
the incompetents in shady insti
tutions from malpractice suits.

sermons. ; :
Meadows, who advocates
speed in spreading the gospel,
tie to more than 300 speaking

1043. He is credited with 350
solo hours, with no accidents de

3000 WARPLANES
HIT FLEEING FOE
AND RHINE SPANS
London, Sunday, Jan. 14. (U.R)
More than 3,000 American
warplanes, faced by 900 heavy
bombers, broke a two-day lull
in the air war yesterday to blast
enemy traffic retreating from
the Ardenens bulge and seven
rail bridges along an 80-mile
stretch of the Rhine.
Clearing weather for the first
time in 10 days sent nearly 900
tactical bombers and fighters of
the U. S. 9th Airforce into the
air to smash freight yards, road
junctions and bridges in and be
hind the bulge. : ,
The American heavy bombers,
escorted by 300 fighters, blasted
rail yards at Bischofsheim and
Kaiserslautern in addition to the
Rhine bridges, while the RAF
rounded, out the day's destruc
tion with a daylight Lancaster
attack on rail facilities at Saar-
brucken.
Last night the. German radio
reported other fleets of Allied
bombers over the Baltic Sea ap
proaching Fomaerania in north'
east Germany and front reports
from the bulge said American
Black Widow night fighters were
attacking German transport in
clear starlight. '
Bridges hit by the heavy
weights included two at Mainz
and others at Rodeshelm.
Worms,, Germersheim, Mann
heim and Karlsruhe.
Fliers of the 9th Airforce
claimed 159 motor vehicles de
stroyed and 17 damaged, seven
tanks destroyed and eight dam
aged, 169 railroad cars destroyed
and six damaged, rail lines cut
in 41 places and highways in
six, as well as destruction of
seven gun positions and 30
buildings.
The German luftwaffe did not
appear, but five fighter bombers
were lost to ground ire ana
other causes.
