At the annual meeting of St.
Peter'g Lutheran church on Port
land avenue, last Sunday the
treasurer, Ernest Mallams, re
ported that the congregation had
over-subscribed its 1944 budget
by more than $1,000. This en
abled the congregation to liqui
date a debt of nearly $1,500,
the balance of the debt on Jan
uary 1, 1944.
In addition to wiping out the
debt the congregation has raised
substantial sum for a building
fund for new church. A large
per cent of the building fund has
been Invested in war bonds, tne
pastor, Harry H. Young, explained.
In its meeting last Sunday the
congregation voted its pastor a
90 Increase in salary.

tributions for missions and the
work of the church at large
from $200 to about $800 last
year,
St. Peter's like other churches
lost heavily to the armed forces
and defense areas in recent
years, but. during 1944 it en
joyed a comeback of about 20
increase In membership.

Howard D. Ferns, whose father
is Charles ,T. Ferns of Fern
Valley. The meeting took place
In the Admiralty Islands.
In the letter Johnson wrote,
"There he stood, with a big
smile on his face, looking right
at me. I tell you, you could
have pushed me over with a
feather. My heart leaped into
my mouth and chills ran up my
spine. It was a funny feeling,
but a good feeling. We ran to
each other and almost fell over
one another. That was one of
the happiest moments of my
life and I'll never forget it."
