Women To Volunteer For
Instruction, Vital Service
Red Cross volunteer nurses
aid committee announces that
arrangements have been made
for a night class, to be held at
the Community hospital, 843 E.
Main street, beginning January
19. Miss Betsy Rolland, R.N,
the announcement continues, has
been secured as instructor, hav
ing previously Instructed .volun
teer nurses aides.

with the Community hospital

and casualties mounting daily,
every woman should ask her
self seriously It she cannot give
some time as volunteer nurse
aide.

alone 82 women have already
graduated as volunteer nurse
idea, not aU of these were per
manent residents, and at pres
ent both Sacred Heart hospital
and Community hospital need

supplied. Business women who
can give evening time and Sun
day help, and housewives who
can offer part time day duty are
especially desired as nurses
aides.

ford Junior Chamber of Com
merce met at a 7 o'clock break
fast meeting at Medford hotel
this morning to complete plans
for a banquet to be held January
20 at which time Loftom Tatum,
state president, will present the
club with its charter.
Vic Mllnes will be general
chairman for the occasion and j
sub-chairmen will be, banquet,
Clarence Schmidt; program, Don
Foote; tickets, BUI Chrysler; dec
orations, Norman Spencer, and
reception. Royal Claire.
Plans have been completed for
. selection of Medford's outstand
' ing Junior citizen, which will be
announced at the banquet.
A special meeting of all mem
bers has been called for 7:30 to
morrow night at the chamber of
commerce building.

Postal service between the Unit
ed States and liberated areas of
the Netherlands will begin a
week from today.
Postmaster General Frank C.
Walker said the postoffice on
January 15 will begin accepting
non-illustrated postcards relat
ing to business as well as per
sonal matters but "limited to
an exchange of information and
ascertainment of facts." The
postage rate will be three cents
per card.
Formations of flying pelicans
are jokingly referred to as the
"Panamanian Air Force" by res
idents of the Canal Zone.

Unofficial Election
Preliminary organization was
completed last night in pre-ses-sion
caucuses with the "unof
ficial" election of presiding of
ficers, clerks and minor offic
ials. Sen. Howard C. Belton, Can
by, was unanimously elected
president of the senate. No op
position was forthcoming as
other prospective candidates for
the post had all withdrawn in
LA.

Rep. Eugene Marsh, McMinn-
ville, was named without op
position to the speakership of
the house of representatives. His
election has been conceded for
number of months with suf
ficient votes pledged him by
house members since about last
June.
Both Belton and Marsh are
Republicans, and will preside
over dominantly Republican
assemblies. In the senate, there
are only five Democrats, while
there are 23 Republicans. In the
house the Republicans have a
SO to 10 majority.
House Officials Named
Other posts of importance In
both houses were determined at
the caucuses. In the house, the
assembly elected the following
officials:
Chief clerk Clarlbel Buff,
previously stenographer to Fred
Drager: assistant chief clerk
Patricia Sylvers, a veteran at
the post; calendar clerk Edith
Bynon Low, who also has held
the post previously; reading
clerk Richard Wilson, another
veteran; sergeant at arms Cap
tain Dow Lovell, Salem, who re
cently returned from several
years overseas with the 41st di
vision; doorkeeper Lee How
ard; and mailing clerk Vivien
Ledoux. Only opposition vote
was on the Dost of mailing clerk.
Miss Ledoux won the post over
M, T. Collins, who held it last
year, by secret ballot in the
smoke-filled caucus room.
At the senate caucus, the fol
lowing clerks and other officials
were named:
Chief clerk Mrs. Zylpha
Burns, a veteran at the post.
