Thoreau wrote of himself so
much because, ha said, it was
the topic on which ho was best
informed.
Well I'll to one better than
Thoreau and Include the Brem
erton ferry In the topic on which
I m best informed.
Having walked and taken
buses a month before Christmas,
I had enough gas to drive to the
ferry and the 15 miles beyond
Bremerton to have Christmas
dinner with the relatives. Going
down Alaska Way, a sign told
me I'd arrived at the ferry. I
drove in, got out and locked the
car; locked it the easy way
Frank taught me; without the
key. Considering all the other
things he could have taught me,
U s a pity h had to pick on that,
Result, I locked the keys in the
car.
At least 75 people tried their
assorted keys. None worked. A
wire was finally thrust through
a crack and the door handle
turned. The keys were rescued
and the car relocked.
Then up the ramp to the wait
ing room I went and was greatly
restored with coffee and conver
sation with various hlms and
hers. 1 wished the ferry would
start. I got a paper and read.
Time went cn. The ferry didn't.
"Where Is the ladies' lounge?"
I finally asked an attendant. He
said there wasn't any. "Oh, yes
there la. I took the ferry once
last summer and there wai a
ladies' lounge then. Though that
time I didn't drive on In a car
like I did today; I walked." I'm
liberal that way,. with personal
information. Let me have occa
alon to speak to a traffic officer
and before we separate, he
knows where I wai born and
that my Uncle Will's falsa teeth
didn't fit and that I'm behind
with the taxes on Hillside. So
now I'd told the man the last
time I'd taken the ferry I'd been
without a car and that there had
been a ladies' lounge. The man
showed a sudden and flattering
interest.
"Lady," gays he, "Just where
do you think you are?"
"On the ferry, of course," was
my rather tart reply.
Well It seemed I wasn't. You
should have seen me whlsh back
down the ramp and leap over
and around curs and people get
ting back to my car.
I hope no one ever flndi out
