SIX BUSINESSES
Three Medford dairies, two
cafes and a grocery store this
morning received oral suspen
sion orders for red-point and
sugar violations following a
hearing conducted at the local
war price and ration board by
OPA enforcement officers from
Portland and San Francisco. Af
fected are the Lost River, Snid
ers and Grovers' dairies, the
Dixie Cafe, Crater Cafe and
Riverside Market.'
In the case of the dairies the
violations concerned butter only
and the owners are to be put on
probation for 30 days with the

A 20-day suspension order
was entered against the River
side Market, dates to be set
later, during which time the
market will not be permitted to
buy or sell foods which require
red-ration points or to buy or
sell sugar.

"Pop" Ellis, as he "was known
to all his friends, was born in
Wisconsin, Aug. 17, 1875. For
the past 16 years he had lived
in Griffin creek district.
He leaves his widow, Mary
Jane Ellis, and five children by
a former marriage: Mrs. Ruby
Gaylc, ' San Francisco; Mrs.
Mary Wallace, Fresno; Mrs.
Opal Whittle, Ventura, Cal.;
MSgt. James Ellis, with the
army In England, and TSgt.
Ernest Ellis, a prisoner of war
in Germany. There are also six
step-children: Mrs. Clara Lar
son, Wisconsin; Mrs. Winnie
Juhnke, Medford; Mrs. Jose
phine McGowan, Jefferson;
Howard Wells, New Pine Creek.
Ore.; Clinton Wells, Medford,
and Elmer Wells, Butte Falls.
There are also 28 grandchildren,
a sister, Mrs. Marion Lineber
ger, and a brother, Ellis, both of
Orange, Cal.
Robert Louis Stevenson died
at the age of 44.

Bowmer Returns Angus
Bowmer, formerly a sergeant
in the army and given an honor
able discharge Oct. 30, has re
turned to Ashland and to the
faculty of the Southern Oregon
College of Education where he
is professor of English. Profes
sor Bowmer entered the army
in July of 1942. Mrs. Bowmer
and her father. H. N. Butler,
will remain in Hollywood until
a residence is secured.

The Crater Lake Area Council
in its annual report for 1944 for
the first time in its history ex
ceeded the one thousand mark
for registered Boy Scouts. Rec
nrd registration was shown in
all departments with figures for
the year as follows: scouts mua,
Scouters 334, Cubs 376, Cubbers
72, or a total Scout family of
1791 men and boys.
In October the Crater Lake
Area Council had it's 20th
birthday and the annual report
for the year ot it's coming xo
Medford, 1924, indicates that
there were 98 Scouts registered.
Two men's names were shown
on the roster at this early date
in Scouting who are still most!
active in the council activities,!
these being uoionei w. n. raine,
council historian and Larry
Schade, council president. At
this time there were six troops
in the council.
Crater Lake Area Council
now has jurisdiction over Jack
son and Josephine counties in
Oregon and Siskiyou county in
California. As of December 31,
1944, there were 110 council
members and 28 members of the
executive board. Troops, Sea
Scout ships, Explorer troops and
Air Scout Squadrons total 41,
while uuomng nas 10 active
packs.

Lake O'Woods and during 1944
approximately 30 percent of the
troops of the council were in
camp for one or more weeks.

Tells Of Japanese
Planes Shot Down
Mr. and Mrs. O. T. Wilson of
Beall Lane recently received a
letter from their son, Sgt. John
L. Wilson who is stationed on
Leyte in which he told of some
of the work of P-38 planes on
the island.
Sgt. Wilson wrote, "I've heard
of it raining "cats and dogs" but
