MERCY PLEA FOR
KILLERS OF WIFE
Albany, Ore., Jan. 8 UR
A mercy plea from the widowed
husband of a woman accidental
ly shot by deer hunters today
gave the four nimrods their free
dom after paying a fine of $100.
The four men were charged
with manslaughter after Lee
Mathews admitted it was his
high-powered deer rifle which
fired the shot killing Mrs. Char
les Duncan as she washed dishes
Monday night in her trailer
house. He said the light In the
window from a distance re
sembled the reflection of a spot
light In a deer s eyes.
Mathews and his companions,
Arthur Andrews, Sabian Cott-
nair and Clarence Mollne, ad
mitted to hunting deer out of
season and to "spotlighting," il
legal at any time. They waived
their preliminary hearing and
were sentenced to pay the fine
and serve up to five years in
prison. Dramatically, Duncan
rose In the courtroom and said
he concurred in their motion for
parole, feeling his wife would
not have desired them sent to
prison.
Mrs. Duncan died seconds af
ter being struck in the chest.
Other slugs ripped into the trail
er house but did not strike their
two children, sleeping in cribs,
or Duncan and a neighbor, play
ing checkers.
