fame In the captlvatine motion
picture, "Going My Way," ar
riving today at the Craterian
theater.
Of course, Crosby long ago
was included in the charmed
circle of the famous, but more
for his velvety vocalizing than
anything else. From here on. the
"groaner" isn't sitting back to
let others take laurels in the act
ing profession he's put his own
oar in the Hollywood waters and
has come up with the finest
catch of the year. He plays Fa
ther "Chuck" O'Mblley, and the
way he plays him elicits rave no
tices from reviewers.
There's nothing lacking in
"Going My Way," critics say, for
the heart-warming story is acted
out by one of the most compe
tent casts and has Leo McCarey
at tr4 reins to handle direction
Bing's brother-priests are Barrv
Fitzgerald, the kindly, - tem
perate whimsical Father Fitz
gibbon and ' Frank ' McHugh
genial and enthusiastic in his
role as Father O'Dowd. Then,
too, Rise Stevens appears
throughout the film as a famous
opera singer, (which she is), ren
dering the "Habanera" aria from
"Carmen" while the Robert
Mitchell boys' choir captivates
audiences, according to reports,
when the group Joins Bing in
several selections.
The simple but eloquent story
relates how Bing is sent as
"trouble shooter" to Fitzgerald's
parish and immediately con
founds that conservative priest

to him are seemingly radical.
His first act is to placate Gene
Lockhart, bank prexy who holds
the mortgage on the parish. The
latter's son, played by James
Brown, figures in the act, too
for he falls in love with Jean

JUNIOR CITIZEN
Jack Matlack, formerly with
the Hunt theaters here, who has
been publicity director for the
J. J. Parker theaters in Portland
for the past two years, has at
tained new honors. The Medford
man has been acclaimed "Junior
First Citizen of Portland for
1944," according to word
ceived here Saturday.
In addition to his theater
work, Matlack has served in
number of civic capacities, his
latest effort in this line being
the direction of publicity for the
state in the motion picture par
ticipation in the sixth war loan
drive.
Matlack is the son of Mrs. L.
J. Matlock of the Jacksonville
highway.
Central Point, Dec. 30 A tur
key dinner, serving to start at
4:30 p. m., will precede the pub
lic installation and presentation
of charter for the new Myers-
Holland Post No. 129, American
Legion here on Wednesday. The
dinner, for which a nominal
charge will be made, will be
given in Grange hall and all
veterans and their wives are in
vited.
Large delegations are expected
from Medford and Ashland.
Those planning to attend from
Medford will meet at the Med
ford hotel at 6 p. m., prepared to
leave at once in pooled cars.
State and district officers of the
Legion will attend the banquet
and installation, leaving the Med
ford hotel with officers from the
Central Point post who will es
cort them to the banquet hall.
Arriving in Central Point the
veterans will form a parade at
the intersection of Highway 99
and Pine street and will proceed
on Pine street to the Grange hall
Central Point high school band
will head the procession.
The new Legion post is named
in honor of Homer Myers and
Vernon Holland, first Central
Point young men to lose their
lives in World War II.

rick L. Herrin, son of Mr. and
Mrs. L. I. Herrin, 509 Hamilton
street, Medford, is currently
assigned to the AAF redistribu
tion station of the Santa Ana
army air base after having serv
ed overseas with the 5th air
force as a cook.
Herrin . entered the service on
January 13, 1942, and went over
seas in February, 1943. He has

Devon Francis, aviation and
science writer, said today after a
three-month study of Japanese
warolanes that several of the
newest enemy types were su
perior in performance to their
opposite numbers in me Ameri
can air forces.
Part of his conclusions were
incorporated In an article in
Popular - Science Monthly de
signed to offset the American
public's conception that Japanese
planes are of poor design and
construction.
Francis described two greatly
improved Japanese fighters
which have appeared recently in
combat, each with a speed of
more than 400 miles an hour.
The fastest American fighter, the
Mustang, has a top speed of 450
miles an hour "plus."
The new Japanese planes are
the "Frank I" which has an IB
cylinder 2000 horsepower air
cooled engine fitted with a water
induction device to give It bursts
of added speed In emergencies,
and "Jack II." a new navy inter
ceptor.
Several Japanese warplanes,
Francis said, had a higher rate
of climb, longer range and excep
t i o n a I maneuverability. To
achieve this, the Japanese con
centrated on light weight at the
expense of protection for pilots
and crews. Thus Japanese de
signers were willing to sacrifice
flying personnel where Ameri
can designers were not.
The chief weakness in Japan
ese warplanes, he found, were
inferior muzzel velocity of fixed
and flexible guns; insufficient
protection tor pilots and crews
and gasoline tanks; inferior gun
nery sighting and compensating
devices and inferior control at
high speeds,

Utah's embattled plural marriage
cultists today launched a drive
they hope will see the repeal of
state laws which say a man can
have only one wife.
With , approximately 40 of
their number under sentences,
Utah's many-wived cultists ap
pear to be on the short end of the
score in their nine-months battle
to date In state and federal
courts. Some of the members al
ready have lost three trials on as
many cnarges.
But they're still fighting.
Today they, struck at one
source of their troubles Utah
statutes on polygamy and cohabi
tation, and the Utah constitution
al provision against polygamy.
In what appears to be a last-
ditch fight, leaders of the funda
mentalist cult who have been in
court almost constantly sine a
three-state round-up last March,
today presented the members of
