foreign service three years ago.
I've quoted from him so fre

one thing, he's such an average
sort of chap and is now leading
the life of the average GI Joe.
He couid so easily be your son
or mine; tt your brother or
husband or sweetheart, i know
him personally and know how

Portland Gypsy
Problem Solved
By Gas Permits
Portland, Ore., Dec. 28 Mffl
The OPA, in the doghouse
wlih many housewives and mer
chants over its 'Christmas sur
prise rationing move, today had
a friend in high places MByor
Eari Biiey of Portinnd.
The OPA heiped She mayor
crack a hard nut in civic purity;
U helped him restore the Port,
land Gypsy community to its
original state of a wandering
tribe.
The mayor long has feit that
the presence of the Gypsies, who
flocked here under the orelcxi
of becoming war workers. wer
a blemish on the ialr nam of
the city. Taking advantage of re
laxed housing restrictions, they
moved into vacant stores and set
up their fortune-teiiing indus
tries. : Despairing of ousting these)
visitors by any other means,
Siiey today finally persuaded
the OPA to let the gypsies have
enough gasoline to lake them
as far as Texas, though he never
mads it clear why the gypsies
should want to gD there or why
Texas Bhouid want them,
