With the Yuletide there often
come questions regarding the na

Astronomical writers, while sug

star's "real and great value
would seem to lie In the fact that
It has symbolized to a large part
of mankind for nearly 2,000
years the finest and most lofty
ideals."
The theories usually offered
will merely be related here with
out elaboration. Many believe
that the Christmas star, men
tioned only In the briefest form
and by a single gospel writer,
was supernatural In nature with
perhaos no material existence
Others who hold that God al
ways works through natural
means, think it may have been
a brilliant planet, or the bright
comet which the Chinese records
mention as appearing at about
that time. Others suggest a flam-

lng meteor, or a spectacular
nova, or "new star," such as
even in our times occasionally
flares up where no star was pre
viously known. Or lt may have
been the gorgeous spectacle of
the close approach to each other
of the bright planets Jupiter,
Saturn and Mars, which occurs
once in 800 years. One such dis
play appeared in 6 B. C.
But lt isn't necessary to go
back to ancient times for a
Christmas star. The sky this
Christmas season Is full of gilt-,
terllng lights ready to give in
spiration to everyone blessed
with eyesight and the soul to
look up.
Our "evening star" is espec
ially spectacular. Scarcely has
daylight - begun to Jade when
high In the southwest a clear,
gleaming dot of light appears.
Brightening ropidl; as the twi
light deepens, lt soon glows as
a radiant little lamp, far surpass
ing any star ever seen in the
heavens. By the time the sky is
really dark, this planet Venus is
so gorgeous that lt must impress
even seasoned observers as an
object of miraculous brilliance
and beauty. Venus Is our spec
ial Christmas star In 1944.
We have still another vivid
Christmas symbol, the Northern
Cross standing almost upright
over the northwestern horizon
between 9 and 10 o'clock at this
seasori.
