The war production board said
today that tighter controls may
have to be placed on lumber
distribution to meet essential
war and civilian needs.
Director J. Philip Boyd of
WPB's lumber and lumber pro
ducts division said action is be
ing considered to offset decreas
ed lumber production which,
from now to mid-March, is ex
pected to be "substantially be
low", last winter's.
Officials of various lumber
Industry advisory committees
told the WPB that the most se
vere drop in production this win
ter is anticipated in the Pacific
northwest.

Mrs. Louise Peete, middle aged
housekeeper convicted of bury
ing a wealthy mining executive
in a cellar crypt a generation
ago, today was booked in Lin
coln Heights jail on suspicion
of murder in the death of a
woman believed to have been
her benefactress.
The charge was made a few
hours after the decomposed
body of a woman, believed to
have been Mrs. Margaret Lo
gan, 60, was found in an 18
inch grave in a flowerbed in
the backyard of 1 the Logan
home.
Mrs. Logan was last seen by
neighbors on June 1, police re
ported. While the advanced stages of
decomposition made Immediate
identification Impossible, police
indicated they were, convinced
the body was that of .Mrs. Lo
gan, who had given Mrs. Peete
a job and a home since she was
paroled from Tehachapl insti
tution for women.

mittee has just published what
it believes to be the most com
plete chronological history yet
compiled of the march of events
leading up to World War II.
Entitled "Events Leading Up
To World War II." the volume
contains 421 pages and Is avail
able for 50 cents at the govern
ment printing office in Washington.
Beginning with the famous
"Mukden Incident" of Septem
ber 18, 1931, when an explosion
on a railway north of Mukden
touched off a Japanese attack on
Manchuria, the volume carries
through the war ud to bepienv
ber 29, 1944, on which date it
records the beginning of the sec
ond phase of the. Dumbarton
Oaks parley.

VERDICT UPHELD

The conviction of six alleged
members of Al Capone's gang
and one union business agent on
charges of extorting more than
$1,000,000 from the motion pic
ture industry was unanimously
upheld today by the United
States circuit court of appeals.
Louis Campagna, Paul De
Lucia, Phil D'Andrea, Frank
Maritote, Charles Gioe, and John
Rosselli were sentenced to 10
years in prison and $10,000 fine
each after their conviction last
December 31. Louis Kaufman,
former business agent of a Ne
wark, N. J., local of the Motion
Picture Operators union was
sentenced to seven years Imprisonment.

W. Swan and Charles Clark
ruled that the men's trial, which
was highlighted hy the testi
mony of previously convicted
William Bioff, was "impartial
. , , and that no honest jury
could have failed to convict
them."
FIVE COMBAT PILOTS
DIE IN NIGHT CRASH
Maiden, Mo., Dec. 21 U.R)
Five combat training pilots, all
second lieutenants, were killed
late last night when a C-47
transport plane crashed and
burned on a thickly wooded
mountain top near Ironton, Mo.
Officials at the Maiden Army
air base said today.

'KILL CRAZY' BOY
TELLS OF MURDER
Dixon, IU., Dec. 21 (U.R)
A 15-year-old boy, who said he
was "kill crazy", confessed to
police today that he slashed his
five-year-old niece to death and
left a butcher knife sticking in
to her mutilated body.
Norman Burton told authori
ties at Princeton, 111., that he
killed his curly-haired niece,
"but I don't know why."
After the slaying at the girl's
farm home three miles north
of Ohio Village, 111., yesterday,
the boy walked and hitch-hiked
about 13 miles to Princeton,
where his mother and father
live. He spent the night in the
City Park, although tempera
tures were far below freezing.
At 7 a. ra. he went to the home
of his father, Charles, and tojej
