Hood River, Ore., Dec. 21
tU.R) The Hood River ost bf
the American Legion expunged
the names of 16 Japanese-Americans
from the post war honor
roll "Because we have every
good reason to believe that they
are citizens of Japan while
claiming citizenship in this coun
try," post officials explained to
day. After a meeting last night In
which the tumultuous Issue was
discussed, the post issued a state
ment denying that economto in
terests were involved in the ac
tion. .
The statement pointed out that
not all Japanese names were re
moved from the roster and said
that the post "would be proud
to replace the names of those
Japanese on our honor roll now
serving in the armies of the
United States when and lf tney
or a relative will make an au
thenticated written statement
that they have renounced their
Japanese citizenship."
The post further questioned
the wisdom of permitting Ja-
panese to return to the Pacific
coast at this time ana aemana-a
to know why the governors of
the three Pacific coast states
were not consulted In the move
to return them.
The statement declared that
west coast citizens should refrain
from violence and pointed to the
post's pledge to uphold law and
order.
Observations
A country woman looks at
store window decorations: I've
found out why city prices are
higher than small town prices
and from now on, it's okey by
me If they are, (I'm not buying
anywayl) It Is because city
stores put such magnificent hol
iday display! In their windows,

Naturally, tha customer pays.
And at that, they get their
money's worth.
In the windows of one of the
larger stores here the story of
Hansel and Oretel is portrayed;
all done mechanically, yet the
little Gretel was so lifelike as
she knelt by her bedside and
bowed her head, I wanted to
stroke the blonde braids and tell
her that her dream would sure
ly come true.
And come true it did in the
window. A dark blue velvet
curtain studded with little elec
tric stars slowly rose and you
should have heard the children,
noses pressed against the glass,
gasp with astonished delight. A
mamma kangaroo sewed in a
most energetla manner while
her baby kept bobbing in and
out of her pouch; Santa drove
over a snowy hill in a silver
sleigh. There were regiments
of lollipops and Ice cream cones
and the whole was the most de
lightful extravaganza I've ever
seen In window decorating.
Intended for the pleasure of
the children, the grownups were
more entranced than were the
youngsters they'd brought as
an excuse to stand and gape at
the marvels art and ingenuity
and electrical equipment had
wrought.
In an another window all the
toy animals of the world were
moving about and going
through the most entrancing
capers. A little bear "took pic
tures" with such a life-like lift
of the camera that when a bulb
flashed one got the feeling a pic
ture actually had been taken,
Giraffes with striped candy
necks curiously Investigated the
waltzing doll as she passed
them. Or was that In the Han
sel and Gretel wlndowl . To a
woman who has never seen such
things before, it's mighty easy
to get an opera and a circus
window display mixed up. .
Since I still won't be buying
I won't mind lf the storekeepers
charge more than ever next
year, if by doing so they again
can make wonderland of their
Christmas windows.
