BEAGLE SECTION
One of the post-war plant of
Jackson county will be the re
placing of county roads in the
present artillery range of Camp
White in the Beagle district, ac
cording to County Commissioner
Arthur E. Powell of Central
Point.
When Camp White was estab
lished the county was required
to vacate all county roads with
in the area, Including rights of
way. When the land is returned
by the government, it is planned
to have a new road system for
the Beagle-Sams Valley district.
Plans to this end are now being
drawn by the county court and
county engineer. Many of the
old roads are still there, but
they are 'narrow, crooked and
steep in places.
. The county court plans as soon
as the area is vacated by the
military, to procure rights of
way before the land is sold to
private owners. Thus any land
will be subject to the county
rights of way. The roads will be
built with an eye to protection
of natural fields and where they
will do the most good.
'. On a recent inspection for a
road survey in the upper Sams
Valley district, an outcropping
of rock believed to be suitable
for road surfacing was discover
ed. One of the county court
problems has been the locating
of a new site for a rock quarry
to supply suitable material for
road work on both old and new
projects.

Washington, Dec. 20 (U.R)
A war department survey of
troops at home and abroad to
day showed that 500,000 of the
approximately 6,750,000 enlisted
men now in the army definitely
plan to return to full-time col
lege or other studies after the
war.
An additional 300,000 are ser
iously considering resuming
their education on a full-time
basis, but are undecided or have
conflicting job plans, it was
found. Still another 1,200,000
men said they were thinking of
attending part-time school or col
lege.
The war department said these
estimates were based on surveys
among white enlisted men only.
A slightly smaller percentage
of Negro soldiers have plans for
full-time schooling. Among jun
ior grade officers the percent
age is somewhat higher.

STATE POLICE TO
GIVE PROTECTION
TO JAP CITIZENS
Salem, Ore., Dec. 20 U.R)
Oregon state police protection
will be given to Japanese-American
citizens, Charles F. Pray,
director of the police organiza
tion, said today. They would be
entitled to the same protection
by his department as any other
citizens, he said.
The police would be somewhat
handicapped, if any disturbances
were to occur, Pray said, due to
the fact that so many men from
his department were to military
service.
Rep. James W. Mott, Oregon
first congressional district, said
that he thought it was a "great
mistake on the part of the war
relocation authority to permit
Japanese and particularly Ja
panese aliens to return , to the
Pacific coast."
There is no necessity for such
action, Mott said, either from
an economic nor international
angle. .
