ning. Mothers of the two young

their sons after the oath had
been administered by J. A. Me
Dougall, who presided.

Plan Early Trial

Neilson reported today steps
would be taken this week for
bringing to trial at an early date
Fred Marrett and wife, held in
the county jail on an Indictment
charging breaking and entering
an office for the purpose of
stealing drugs. The couple have
been in Jail for more than two
months. Sheriff office officials
said they were model and useful
prisoners. They were witnesses
for the government In recent
federal count narcotlo cases, The
district attorney anticipated the
trial would be set for early in
January,
SEABEE ENLISTMENTS
ARE ON QUOTA BASIS
Although enlistments In the
navy's famed Seabees (construc
tion battalions) have been re
opened to men not now in a de
ferred classification because of
essential jobs, Herb Crain of the
Medford navy recruiting sub
station announces that the petty
officer ratings available are on
a strict monthly quota basis and
that the "first come, first
served" policy is being followed.
Men with skilled trades who
are Interested In joining the
Seabees are asked to contact the
recruiter In the Postoffice build
ing without delay in order that
they can take a preliminary
physical examination before
making a formal application.
Delay may mean that a certain
rating will close before a per
son takes any action. ' '

LODGED IN JAIL
Two armed bandits last night
held up and robbed A. J. Hays
of $150 about 1V4 miles west
of Grants Pass on the Redwood
highway, according to a state
police report. The bandits, dress
ed in faded army uniforms, then
forced a woman to drive them
into Grants Pass, the report
stated.
A road block was placed north
and south of Grants Pass and
state police apprehended George
Vincent Flynn, 32, from the
Veterans Home, Napa, Calif.,
who allegedly admitted the rob
bery and use of a gun to carry
out the holdup. Another man,
about 19, whose name was not
learned, also was picked up In
connection with the robbery and
both are being held in Jail at
Grants Pass, .
WILL MEET HERE
A district meeting of the coun
ty courts of Jackson, Josephine,
Douglas, Coos and Curry coun
ties will be held in the court
house here tomorrow, County
Judge J. B. Coleman reports.
The state is divided into six dis
tricts, and meetings are held at
regular Intervals. Judge Cole
man said "everything In gen
eral" will be discussed, there
being no fixed discussion.
The Josephine county delega
tion will be composed of County
Judge W. A. Johnson, W. W.
Balderee and Dr. W. A. Moser,
newly elected representatives,
and L. M. Mitchell, commis
sioner-elect, County Engineer H.
B. Brown, and W. E. Moore, gen
eral manager of the Josephine
General hospital.

received by his parents, Mr, and
Mrs. H. H. Corliss of 938 S.
Holly street. The article featur
ing Corliss Is entitled '.'Koad
bullders to Tokyo."
Another son of the Corliss',
Cpl. Kenneth Corliss, is some
where in France. Ho writes his
parents that his mail has not
caught up with him in two
months.
ASHLAND WOMAN TAKEN
BY DEATH IN EUGENE'
Ashland, Dee. 19 Lucina E.
Turner, 68, passed away at Eu
gene, ure., uec. 10. one came to
Ashland from Klamath Falls in
May of this year and made her
home at 99 Granite street. .
She Is survived by her hus
band, Edson S. Turner, two chil
dren, Mrs. W. S. Davis, Apple
gate, and Mrs. Marlon Sodcr
man, Tule Lake, and five sisters
and two brothers.
Funeral services will be held
at Lltwlller funeral home
Thursday at 1:30 p. m., crema
tion following In Grants Pass.

are planning living memorials
to the war dead in the lorm oi
municipal recreational centers.
Municipal officials and veter
ans' organizations feel that such
memorials are more fitting and
useful ways to express their re
spect for the dead than the tradi
tional statues, according to re
ports of he International City
Managers' Assn,
Among the communities which
are planning to erect auch me
morials are Louisville and pedu
cah. Ky Toledo, O., and Edger-
ton, Wis. Counties with such
plans are Muskegon in Michigan
and Milwaukee in Wisconsin. '

Several parents of the city and
county have been warned by po
lice they would be hailed into
court the next time their 'teen
age girls and boys were retained
for not attending school regular
ly. Officials said this breach was
not common but a few cases
were becoming habitual and
some action would be taken.
The sheriff's office reports a
few complaints of farmers and
others permitting stock to run
at large horses on the Crater
Lake highway and sheep getting
loose and eating up -neighbors'
