PAPERS PRAISE
FDR BOND DRIVE
NewroaDers throutihout Amer
ica have been complimented by
the treasury department for
their support In the sixth war
loan drive. Following are two-
messages expressing apprecia
tion (or the splendid work car
ried on by the press in promo
tion ot the bond drive.
'Dally and Sunday newspa
pers carried a total of 1,871,075
lines 01 iront page news and edi
torial support of the sixth war
loan drive from Nov. 13 through
Nov. 21 This represents an In
crease of 13.3 per cent over the
outstanding newspaper, record
for the corresponding period of
the fifth drive.
"Weekly newspapers are giv
ing excellent co-operation and
their news and editorial support
will also show a substantial in
crease over the fifth drive.
"Many dally and weekly
newspapers devoted their entire
front pages on the opening day
of the drive to war bond news.
"Frank E. Tripp, Chairman,
Allied Newspaper council."
"In this the busiest season of
the year newspaper support of
the sixth war loan has been
truly magnificent. In spite of
the paper shortages and other
operating handicaps newspapers
have contained to give freely of
thetr valuable space In support
or this vital program. This In
tensified effort on the part of
the newspapers of America has
been greatly needed to help at
tain our sixth war loan goal.
"In the closing days of the
drive, the support which news
papers and retailers (through
newspaper advertising) have
maintained so superbly thus far,
will be of inestimable value In
helping us reach our war bond
sales quota for Individuals.
"There Is a close parallel In
the amount of newspaper sup
port and war bond sales through
out the country, and the treasury
sincerely appreciates the co-operation
of the nation's press.
"Ted R. Gamble, director.
"War finance division,
treasury department."

TELLS OF TRIP ON
HOSPITAL BOAT
Describing the care which he
has been given since being
wounded during the battle of
the Philippine islands, and life
on' a hospital ship, Sgt. Philip
D. Whltaker, with the Bern in
fantrv Division, recently wrote
to Mrs. Whltaker. His wife, the
former Ruth Hedges, Is making
her home in Medford with her
parents, Dr. and Mrs. A. R.
Hedges, 836 East Main street.
Sgt. Whltaker wrote in part:
"I am now aboard a hospital
shlD. All in all I think it is the
most beautiful ship I have ever
seen (If I am bit enthusiastic
as to its beauty as far as na
val eye would Judge, let me
sav that certainly it was the
most welcome one I have ever
beheld.) It . is , painted white
with the big Red Cross promi
nently displayed. It cruises
through enemy waters with the
greatest of abandon an ugnts
blaze at night. I, for one, am
not so trusting toward our little
slant-eyed friends and would
Just as soon the ship be painted
black and have no lights. The
Japs certainly led us a hectic
life in the hospital on shore
with their planes.
"But back to the ship and Its
luxuries. Upon arrival- aboard
we were assigned to comfort
able bunks with whit sheets
and pillows. We war given
showers and Issued new paja
mas and slippers. (I have use
for only one.) The Red Cross
furnished us a kit with tooth
brush, shaving cream, etc.,
which I put to good use.
"Everyone Is so kind and con
siderate. . I cannot say enough
for the medical branch of the
service. From the aid men In
the Infantry platoon on up the
ladder they are a great organi
zation. We have nurses aboard
ship and It Is strange to hear
women's voices again that is
American women. I am sure
their touch adds a great deal to
the rapidity ot recovery for the
soldier. .
"The food Is superb! My ap
petite is increasing in leaps and
bounds and I shall recover some
lost pounds I am sure. We have
music and lounge rooms so you
can see I am really enjoying ev
ery comfort.
"As to my own progress I can
report that I am doing fine. My
foot rarely bothers me and with
the aid of crutches I bounce
around In good order. I have a
severe laceration so it will be
sometime before I can put a
u. 1. shoe on.
"By the way If the occasion
arises please donate to the Red
Cross your husband is indebt
ed to them for their generous
services. Also if there are any
drives on to clothe the Phlll-
pinos please give to them for
they are destitute absolutely
poverty stricken following the
Japanese Greater Asia Co. Pros
perity program. The Japs are
like a plague. Everything they
touch becomes rotten.
"Many of the Phlllptnos aid
ed us greatly and fought side
by side with us. And children
certainly this is 'the most pro
lific race on earth. Every vil
lage, every hut was simply over
flowing with alt ages, sizes and
shapes. But even as destitute
as they are, they are surprising
ly clean.
"I am going to have to scrape
up postage for these letters
somehow. My worldly posses
sions over here consist of my
wallet containing 9 pesos of
