In hue. So-called "black" hair,
Ilka "black" skin or "black"
eyes contains the most pigment,
but still the pigment Is brown.
Blond hair rontains the least pig
ment. Persons having the least
pigment In the iris (color ring
around central black pupil) are
"blue eyed," but one with no
pigment at an in tne iris is pin
eyed (albino), because the pink
or reddish hue of the blood in
the vessels in the interior of the
eye shows through. Incidentally
all babies (except albinos) have
blue eyes at birth: .permanent
coloration of the eyes does not
take place until the baby is five
or six weeks old. ' .' i
Red hair-is brown hair that
happens to contain less air glob
tiles In the cortex or outer layer
of the. shaft to darken the ap
pearance of the pigment an In
dividual "red" hair examined
under the microscope Is Just
brown like all human hair. .'. ;
The hair of albinos (persons
born with congentlal lack of pig
ment) have pure white hair. 1
Many persons begin to turn
gray before 30, and few reach
SO without some graying of the
hair, praying is more noticeable
In persons with dark hair color.
That graying is not due to loss
or removal of pigment from 'the
balr seems evident from the ob
servation that graying takes
place first close to the scalp and
only after the hair has grown to
Its full length does it become en
tirely gray. The graying is due to
failure of nutrition, failure of the
blood to supply what it takes to
make the pigment. We'll con
sider presently whether there is
anything one can do about it.
Hair that has turned "white"

Purely fanciful and hearsay
are tales of hair turning gray or
white over night" from some
treat : shock or sorrow such
yarns belong in the category of
the hero or heroine of the ro
mantic novel of the early Vic
torian era who developed "brain
fever" when the going became
too torrid, and the whisper
passed about by the woman with
a scandal . to conceal, that a
negro child was -born to white
people because there happened
to be a drop of negro blood con
tributed by some errant fore
bear. These things never happen,
but they make such interesting
conversation.
Casual observers sometimes
notice how gray or white the
hair of an old acquaintance has
turned since last they met and
perhaps draw inferences if the
acquaintance has suffered some
tragic loss, disregarding the
time that has passed in the in

Healthy Children
Our two girls, raised on "Preparing

STEEL INDUSTRY
E
Washington, Dec. 12 (U.R)
The steel industry charged to
day that concessions granted
the United Steel Workers (CIO)
by the War Labor Board vio
lated the government's stabili
zation program and called on
the WLB for a reconsideration
of the steel wage case.
The WLB said in announcing
its recent decision that the ad
justments Involved would not
break the little steel wage cell
ing. The union won mainten
ance of membership, dues check
off, shift differentials. Increased
vacation pay, and adjustment of
alleged wage Inequities.
Chairman John A. Stephens
or tne steel Industry research
committee said the WLB order
imposed a serious financial bur
den on the 70 companies. He
said they would accept dues
checkoff and maintenance of
membership but would press
tor revisions of the others.
