ON FRUIT CAKE IDEA
Operators of the Groceteria
Super Food Markets In Medford
received considerable comment
on their merchandising ideas In
the December issue of Vitality
News. The magazine, published
by Products Control Department
of General Mills, Inc., stated
that in order to "make" the edi
torial columns of the publication
a baker's merchandising and ad
vertisement Ideas must be of in
terest to other bakers. As a con
sequence, In many quarters pub
licity of a baker s achievement
in this publication is regarded
as national recognition.
The story, which appeared un
der two column picture, fol
lows: .
Attracted by series of four
newspaper ads and four short
radio announcements, Medford,
Ore., citizens rushed to Gates
& Lydiard for an item made to
order for servicemen's overseas
packages. The product causing
the rush was a 13A lb. fruit cake
baked and sealed in a size IVi
can. And at tire end of dead-line
date for overseas mailings, this
retail shop had disposed of 2,000
packages at $1.49 each and by
year s end the score on fruit
cake 'is expected to reach 5,000
lbs.
Pres. W. A. Gates, and Coun
ty Home Demonstration Agent
Marian J. Farrell, worked out
the campaign with cooperation
from the County Home Dem

sealing equipment.. As newspa
per ads explained it, "We fur

seal it."
