SAY DUAL STATUS
Hood River, Ore., Dec. 6 U.B
The Hood River American
Legion post today cited the al
leged "dual citizenship" ol per
sons of Japanese ancestry born
in the United States ai one of
the reasons for striking the
names of 18 Japanese-American
soldiers from Its war memorial
plaque.
The names of the 18 Japanese-
American soldiers serving from
Hood River county, some of
whom are overseas, were re
moved from the plaque last
Wednesday. The action brought
sharp criticism from the Port
land, Ore., Council of Churches
and the American Civil Liberties
union.
The legion post passed a reso
lution, at a meeting of the post,
saying "that the names of the
Japanese should not be included
on our memorial plaque .until
they have completed their tour
of service, andor a decision by
competent authority has been
rendered on their dual citizen
ship." A spokesman for the legion
aid the group understands that
any Japanese born In this coun
try Is registered in Japan, and
that the Japanese government
pays $29 to the parents of any
boy born here.
The resolution asserted, "It Is
impossible for our government
to differentiate between loyal
and disloyal Japanese," both
alien and American-born, and
that the evacuation from Pacific
coast areas of these persons was
to further the security of mill'
tary and naval operations.
Mall-bag: "After reading your
column on getting stuck In
hotel room, I just had to write
you about an experience my
husband and I went through
which Included not only getting
stranded In a hotel but some
other things I'd like to forget.
"We were riding along in a
truck when. suddenly our brakes
gave way on a down hill slope
and the truck leaped Into the
bonk like a big mechanical Jack
rabbit and came to rest bottom
side up, The fire extinguisher
hanging over my husband's head
had come down and bopped him;
a gallon of turpentine Just back
of the seat had spilled down my
neck.
"I came too, sitting atop my
husband and saw blood flowing
over his shirt front. Examina
tion showed this came from a
cut ear, not a severed Juglor
vein. I figured no one had ever
bled to death from a cut ear so
I tried to shake him back to
consciousness. A crowd gather
ed. Did you ever notice how,
when an accident .occurs, a
crowd can gather In nothing flat
out of thin airl We had to climb
through the top of the car and
though I weighed 180, I riz like
a bird and piled out.
An enormous old German
gentleman stood near. He had a
'German goiter' and a walrus
moustache. He kept patting me
on the back and saying, 'Vos Ies
disl vos lss dlsl" I leaned my
forehead against his big tummy
until the earth quit whirling.
"After the truck was righted
we coasted back into Spokane
My silk stockings were riddled,
my hair in strings, my husband's
shirt was torn and bloody. Every
one looked at us as it they were
thinking, 'What a party that
must have been!'
"After we'd cleaned up as well
as we could, my husband said
we might go to a show while
we were waiting for the truck to
be fixed. We did but goon the
warm air of the theatre began
to bring out the fumes of the
till pentlne in my suit and people
around us moved as far away
as they could. You seem always
to be getting into such messes
so I thought I'd write and let
you know that you haven't all
the bad luck."

KITS IT HEAD-ON
Headquarters, list Bomber
Command, Saipan, Dee. 6 (U.R)
A Japanese fighter crashed
head-on Into a Superfortress six
miles over Tokyo, knocking out
one engine and bringing -a
swarm of enemy planes down en
the "cripple," but the big bomb
er shook them off and finished
out the 1,900 mile homeward
flight safely.
Pilot Lt. Donald J. Dufford,
Grand. Junction, Colo., was
bringing tha Superfortress in
over Tokyo on Its bombing run
Sunday when th Japanese
fighter, with a dying pilot at the
controls, rammed into tha B-2
"Our bombardier immediately
took charge of tha forward guns
and my co-pUot released the
bombs." Dufford said.
"The Jap cam right Into us.
He closed so fast I hardly real
ized what happened. I must have
pulled the Superfortress' nose
up, because I remember think
ing about doing that."
The bombardier, 2d Lt, Joseph
Hankoff, Baltimore, Md., said he
saw his tracer bullets ripping
into the Japanese filer's cockput
Just before the collision.
The crash ripped away part
of one Superfortress engine and
the nacelle, and then the Japa
nese fighter's right wing whirl
ed by Sgt. R. V. Rainier, Gores-
beck. Tex., in his tall gun posi
tion, smashing the right gun
blister as lt passed.
The rest of the enemy plane
tumbled over and over until lt
plunged into another Japanese
fighter trailing th B-29 by
about - 290 yards. Both ships
burst into flames and exploded.
