HOME SERVICE
The American Red Cross has 3,750 county chapters and 5,625
branches, as well as representatives in Army posts and Navy
stations. This vast network of communication makes the Red
Cross particularly well equipped to fulfill, through the home
service departments, the obligations of its Congressional
charter to extend aid and counsel to servicemen and their
families.
Since Pearl Harbor, Jackson County Chapter has trained
fourteen Home Service Aides, all volunteers who in coopera
tion with the two professional workers, have extended aid
and counsel to hundreds of men and women in the armed
forces and to service men's families. Red Cross home service
includes handling inquiries, messages, information requests,
furlough investigations, reports, foreign inquiries, assistance
on claims and benefits, family counseling, vocational rehabili
tation and arranging for medical care,
i Two new, services instituted in this chapter are the organiza
tion of tlje Prisoner of War Families and a committee on com
munity aid to veterans.
CAMP AND HOSPITAL
COUNCIL SERVICE
This is. a civilian agency, organized at the request of the Army
and Navy to take care of recreation needs of men on military
reservations and in military and naval hospitals, army camps
and navy ships that cannot be met through official sources.
Curtains, cushion,, furniture, phonographs, books, games, mu
sical instruments, radios are some of the items supplied. Ap
proximately two hundred day rooms and many sunrooms have
been furnished at Camp White by organiiationt and individ
uals through the good offices of this Council. -
HOSPITAL AND RECREATION
These famous "Gray Ladies" visit wards in the hospital at
Camp White where they write letters, do errandi and shop
ping for the patients. They also teach crafts to the bed and
ambulatory patients and play games and entertain the men in
the recreation hall. Upon request from the Assistant Field
Director they plan parties and bring in girls to assist. At
Christmas they assist with the Director's plans, helping with
the trees and decorations and supplying pop-corn balls. Forty
two volunteers have been trained and certified as Gray Ladies.
MOTOR CORPS ,
These volunteers are on call 24 hours a day for transporting
' maternity cases to and from the Station Hospital. Every day .
of the week they take the Gray Ladies to the hospital besides
which they help with the other chapter services. They have
taken two long trips when railroad transportation was unavail- '
able for polio cases and "Time was of the Essence." Fifty-four
women received certificates for this Corps.
NURSE'S AIDE
Anyone who has been inside a hospital has seen these volun
teer Nurse's Aides in their trim blue uniforms. With graduate
. nurses answering the call of the Army and Navy, these Nurse's
Aides have rendered extremely valuable service in both the
Community and Sacred Heart Hospitals, the Army Clinic, the-
Public Health Clinic in Medford, and in the Community Hos
pital in Ashland. Sixty-five volunteers have been trained for
this service in Jackson County.
STAFF ASSISTANTS
These are the volunteers who do the most diversified work of
' any of the volunteer services. They are proficient in typing,
shorthand, filing, bookkeeping, and receptionist duties. The
. Staff Assistance Corps keeps up-to-date a master file of" all
. the active volunteer personnel cards, mimeographs hundreds
of letters, bulletins and reports. They have worked at the
O.P.A., at the Junior Red Cross rooms, and at the Auxiliary
Recruiting Center at the Outpost; and helped during the col
lection of the War Fund at the Chamber of Commerce. In
their work the 65 Corps members have been assisted by 94
volunteers in the main office and these other civic duties.
SEWING, KNITTING AND
SURGICAL DRESSINGS
The bulk of the sewing and knitting is done by seventeen
units throughout the county. The surgical dressings are made
in the Court House and in seven communities. Knitted1 gar
ments include helmets, mufflers, sweaters, gloves, stump
socks, all for the service men; there are also kit bags which
are presented to the men on board the transports about two
or three days out and these are considered great morale build
ers. Great numbers of hospital garments have been sewed and
a staggering number of dressings have been completed by
conscientious volunteers, both men and women; the room
were opened twice a week during the summer for the benefit
of business women and men. A large quota Is to be finished
by Dec. 31st, 1944, and it will take the splendid cooperation
of the many volunteers to make this possible.
NUTRITION
Nation-wide .interest in conservation of food, its preparation
and preservation has been promoted in the Jackson County
Chapter. Twenty-six women have received certificates sine
Pearl Harbor and a group of eight girls in the Prospect District
have been trained as Canteen Aides, but have not been certi
fied. ..
HOME NURSING
To help maintain health on the civilian front, the home nurs
ing department provides, training in nursing skills, through its
standard 12-lesson course and the new, streaii-lined "Six
Lessons in Care' of the Sick." Long before Pearl Harbor there
had been classes in Home Nursing and 42 certificates were
awarded in 1941. Since that time 30 classes with 447 certi
fied pupils have been instructed by 28 qualified teachers. ,
NURSF RFrRITITMFlMT
At the request of the War and Navy departments, the Ameri-
- D J r .1 i -
. and Navy nurses. Last year 167 nurses from Oregon were as
signed to the Army and 36 to the Navy. In Jackson County
there were 11 Recruits for Army and Navy and 5 First Re
serves and 25 Second Reserves.
FIRST AID, WATER SAFETY
AND ACCIDENT PREVENTION
In 1942, 2776 standard and advanced first aid certificates
were issued to students and adults. The water safety program
has been curtailed for some time due to the lack- of an ade
quate pool for instruction. It is hoped that this necessary activ
ity of Red Cross will be again instituted in 1945. An Accident
Prevention Committee has started to function within the past
month.
JUNIOR RED CROSS
There are 45 Grado and 12 High Schools in Jackson County
and these have 100 enrollment in Junior Red Cross. When
school is In session they make hundreds of articles for service
men in hospitals, oamps and ships. During the past two sum
mers the Junior Red Cross has maintained three workshops
in addition to their own headquarters where they have pro
duced and shipped 18,816 articles, Including toys, writing
boards, scrapbooks, games, writing portfolios, greeting cards,
etc., in addition to their Prisoner of War Kits which have re
ceived national recognition.

is needed, of course, but you can do MORE by serving YOUR
SELF in various vital activities of YOUR Red Cross right here

BRANCHES
The Jackson County Chapter has two branches, one in Ash
land and the other the Camp White Auxiliary established in
August, 1943. Tho activities of these branches are counted
in with those of the Chapter as far as volunteer hours and pro
duction numbers are concerned, but the story of their accom
plishments should be listed separately. The Executive Secre
tary at Ashland has been active as a volunteer for more than
twenty years and is known as "Mrs. Red Cross." That in itself
. is a story. Ashland has its own Motor Corps.
The Camp White Auxiliary is represented In all Volunteer
Special Services and since its inception 202 women have been
in classes with 23 having been certified for work in the Corps.
- 1168 women from the S.C.U., 91st and 96th Divisions in addi
