the European theater of opera
, tions, has been promoted to cap
tain, according to information
received recently by his par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl von der
Hellen, Route 3, Box 458. The
officer has been awarded the
air medal and three oak leaf
clusters. Capt. von der Hellen's
broth, Richard, recently com
pleted basic training at Camp
Wolters, Tex., and following a
short furlough at home is now
at Ft, Ord, Calif., awaiting as
signment to overseas duty.

Oatman, at 12:23 p. m. today to
extinguish a flue fire, according
to a report from the fire de
partment. Little damage was
done the fire department said.
Returns Mrs. Iona Conaway
returned early this week from
Geneva, Neb., where she spent
the past several weeks with her
husband, M. Sgt. Clair Cona
way. Sgt. Conaway has now
been assigned to overseas duty.
Mrs. Conaway is on the staff of
the Merle Norman studio here.

He was born In Boulder, Colo.,
August 23, 1881. On July 20,
1920, he was united in marriage
to Nellie Fredenburg at Yreka,
Calif. They took up a homestead
in the Meadows, near Beagle,
and remained there until Feb
ruary, 1944. Since then he had
lived In Medford.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Nellie
Jain, he leaves three brothers
and four sisters: E. E. Jain, Dal
las, . Ore.; Benjamin - Jain, San
Diego; L. M. Jain, Twin" Falls.
Idaho; Mrs. Florence Cunning
ham, San ' Diego; Mrs. Lottie
Brunelng, Boulder, Colo.; Mrs.
Bertha Boylan, Sand Point, Ida.;
and Mrs. Clara Arbuthnot, Long
Mont, Colo.

WELFARE DOCTOR
Resignation of Dr. William
W. P. Holt as county physician
was announced following the
last meeting of the Jackson
county public welfare commis
sion. Dr. Holt has served in the
office for the past eight years.
Commission members an
nounce that patients are being
cared for by a panel arrange
ment of four doctors supplied
by the Jackson County Medical
Society.
Reports submitted at the meet
ing were ta the effect that 831
old-age assistance cases were
handled during the month of
October, expenditures being
$27,346. This is but slightly
more than September when old
age assistance totaled $27,024.
General assistance, for 204 cases
totaled $7,775 as compared to
$6,432 for September for 184
cases. '
Twenty-five children were
maintained in foster homes at a
cost of $579. the report shows,
while last month 19 children
were kept in foster homes at a
total cost of $469. Aid to de
pendent children totaled $4,624
for 158 children as compared to
$4,329 for 159 children for Sep
tember. Nine cases of assistance
to the blind totaled $422 for Oc
tober' as compared to $438 for
ten casesv for the previous
month. "

Christmas turkeys in Jackson
and Josephine counties, for both
army and civilian use, will start
next week, a representative of
Swift and Company reports.
Fattening of the fowls, delayed
both by a late hatch and poor
growing conditions, has Been
underway for a couple of weeks.
Ceiling prices are being paid
for both civilian and army use
turkeys.
It is 'estimated that approxi
mately 25,000 valley birds were
sold for the Thanksgiving trade,
leaving between 70,000 and 75
000 in the two counties for the
Yule and post-Yule trade. The
turkey production was estimat
ed at the start of the season at
100,000 birds. , ' ,
