excuse he blandly gave. Then
hunting season had opened the
third week and surely we would
n't delay the war effort by un
dermining his morale. NVlnicn
was. what would happen if he
didn't go hunting. What would
Eisenhower and StIUwell and
the boys in the fox holes think
ol us if they tound out we'd kept
him from his hunting? We
blanched and retreated,
. But you'll recall our business
simply wouldn't wait after a
month so you just up and took
the old jallopy out; "Put her In
reverse when you go down hili,"
you said, "and if you get took
for having no brakes, tell them
about the mechanic's morale and
the war. The war's an alibi for
anything."
The mechanic had thought us
unreasonable. "If you were In a
big city, you d have to wait three
months for your car, not three
weeks'
So when I got to the big city,
I don't know why 1 stepped over
to a garage and asked could I
get my car fixed. I had no hopes;
but I could at least make .the!
gesture. I got scared when the
mechanic was pome. Didn t he
know there was a war on and
that he should be insulting? The
more insulting, the more tie d
drive home the fact of the war;
sort of a patriotic duty, you
might say. So his politeness
scared me: maybe he had gone
crazy. A sock In the jaw I could
understand but not this bow and
smile. 1 backed oil.
But my collapse came when he
said, "Drive your ear right In,
lady:- we can have It fixed in
two hours; if you can leave it
for a whole day, we'll do a real
ly good job." I was some better
by night but had a relapse this
morning when the hair dresses
said yes, she could fix my hair.
but not before this afternoonl
Come up and pinch me, Frank.
Maybe I'm unconscious and dont
know it.
