The rising of the brilliant
planet Jupiter was to many an

one of their glorious gods. To
the poets of Greece, sunrise was

resplendent sun-chariot which

was the appearance of a cloud
set afire below the horizon in
the dawn and finally blown Into

In what direction does a star
after clearing the horizon, move
m the eastern sky? Perhaps the
simplest guess is that it goes
straight up. This means that if it
rises due east, it will after about
six hours come to the overhead
point.
At the equator this guess is
correct. All sky objects, from
north around to the south, after
rising go straight up the sky
along a path at 00 degrees to
the horizon line. But as the ob
serving traveler goes north from
the equator, he finds these stel
lar paths up from the horizon
