back trail of bigtlme competi

his belt.
. Snead's 28 months In the

They were tied at 217 Satur

He won a $1,873 war bond and
should get tougher In coming

10 Birdies
Snead carded 10 birdies In
the four days and was one of
three pros 'to fire a sub-par 20,
despite torrential rains and sog

on the 15th yesterday, with the
$2,875 war bond first prize in
tight, when a spectator deflected
his ball Into some bushes. Hit
recovery was perfect and he
holed out in par.
Ted Longworth, long-driving
Portland pro, cupped a long putt
on the final green to birdie him
self into third prize money of

O'CONNOR TALKED
AS COMMISSIONER
WILL NOT ACCEPT
Chicago, Nov. 27. U,R) Spec
ulation as to who will succeed
the late Judge Kenesaw Moun
tain- Landis as commissioner of
baseball was rife today with the
most logical choice for the post
definitely on record as saying
he would not accept it.
He is Leslie O Connor, Landis
long-standing friend and hand-
picked secretary, who told the
United Press recently, "I posi
tively will not take the commis
sioner's post if it is offered to
me.
O'Connor's refusal ostensibly
removes one of the top candi
dates from the list of prospec
tive successors since it was the
56-year-old lawyer who served
as Landis secretary from the
time the former federal Judge
took over as baseball czar in
1921.
O'Connor will continue to
handle the administration of
baseball's government until the
Dec. 11-13 major league meeting
here at which time the club
owners will select Landis' suc
cessor.
The body of the aged commis
sioner was cremated Saturday,
shortly after his death, and in
conformance ' with his wishes,
no funeral service was held.
Another request that friends re
frain from sending flowers ap
parently was observed.

PORTLAND GOLF
Portland, Ore., Nov. 27 (U.R)
A success of the first Portland
open golf tournament, despite
the rain, today encouraged Spon
sor Robert Hudson to start plan
ning for a northwest circuit of
big-time meets for 1945.
Hudson envisaged jopen tour
neys in Vancouver arid Victoria,
B. C; Seattle, Spokane, Tacoma
and Portland, from where the
nation's topnotchers would con
tinue Into California and the
winter circuit.
Hudson said such a guaran
teed schedule would attract all
the big-name players and make
it worthwhile for them to tour
the northwest. Hudson, a
wealthy wholesale grocer, al
most single-handedly promoted
the Portland event, " Including
taking it away from Miami.
He had no choice this year
but to card the tourney in late
November, but he predicted an
earlier northwest loop would
provide perfect weather condi
tions. Visiting players were en
thusiastic - about the $16,000
Portland meet, richest on the cir
cuit, and promised to return
