there was something about her
which men found irresistible; a
quaint conceit I've found most
women, have. Take me, for ex
amole but never mind.
She couldn't stand working In
a shipyard or an aircraft plant
either; she was too refined to
associate with the type of wom
en employed there. Canneries
were out; too messy. Just seem
ed there was no place for a wom
an of her intelligence and re
finement. .
I then said I'd thought of the
very thing. A member of the
family would have heard and
shuddered, recognizing mother
was Just about to pull something
of which they'd be very much
ashamed. But the woman didn't.
She was all agog, such was the
bright promise of my voice.
Yes, I said, I knew' the very
thing for a clever person like
her. The start would be excit
ing and amid those as hungry
for living as she was. I said. "Go
out and get a big strong sack;
tie yourself In It and then Jump
In the sound. Do your part and
