GEN. CLARK SAYS
Rome, Nov. 18 (U.R) A ma
jor battle developed on the
approaches to Pacnza today as
British Eighth Army troops, ad-
vanclng on a broad front against
German opposition, reached the
town of Fugnn, four miles south
cast of the Via Emila highway
and communication center.
(The Rome radio, heard In
London, said Lt. Gen. Mark W.
Clark, allied 5th Army com
mander, said in an address to
day that 40,000 Germans had
been put out of action in the last
two months on the Italian front,
where the al'ies kept 25 German
divisions pinned down.)
"German garrisons defending
the city threw large forces of in
fantry, supported by tanks and
heavy artillery, against the Brit
ish and Indian troops, who were
ncaring the city along highway
nine from the southeast. Other
allied troops encountered heav
ily mined areas south and south-
cast of Facnza. Emphasizing
the fierceness of the . fighting,
official reports referred repeat
edly to sharp German counter
attacks.
The allied drive was augment
ed by a . third army column
which captured Monte Fortlno,
an enemy strongpoint, five and
one-half miles south of Faenza.

Y
San Francisco, Nov. 18 (U.R)
Sentences ranging from eight to
IS years confinement have been,
Imposed on 50 negro navy en-
listed men found guilty of mu-l
tiny, in the nation's largest mass
court martial for refusing to
load ammunition following thej
Port Chicago explosion, the 12th',
Naval District announced today.'
All of the 50 men convicted i
on one specification of mutiny'
were initially sentenced to 15
years confinement, reduction In
rating to apprentice seamen,
and dishonorable discharge up
on completion of sentences, the
navy said.
However, Rear Admiral
Carleton H. Wright, district
commandant, reduced the sen-
. e ni 11 n
tuners UL acumen tu it jrt;uia,
11 to 10 years and five to eight
yearSj upon reviewing the find-J
inss of the court martial, com-j
pleted last month.
Wright mitigated the sentenc
es of the 40 men because of their
youth, previous clear records
and short service period, the
announcement explained. The
sentences may bo further miti
gated upon review by the Judge
advocate of the navy, the bureau
of personnel and the secretary
of the navy. ' None, however,
may be Increased.
Under naval regulations, the
period of confinement may be
reduced by as much as one-third
for good )chavior.
