Until he'd Joined the navy,
he'd been a night club i enter
tainer. Everything about him
bore witness of his profession
his easy social manner, his ever
ready repartee, his endless flow
of wise cracks. He had, I
thought, the ultra in what we
think of as city sophistication.
Though lust thirty,' he was
married for the second time, he.
told me. His first wife had been
a professonai dancer. They'd
had no trouble, but never being
together, one day they botn
realized each had grown Indif
ferent to the other. They sep
arated. Then he met Paula.
He .couldn't understand what
Paula saw In him. Paula had
her master's degree while he
had never finished high school.
Getting a job In a night club
one vacation, It was found he
Had a natural flair for that type
of work and so he kept on with
it.
He and Paula had a little girl
now, just 9 months old. His
mother cared for the baby while
Paula wrote dramas for. radio.
When the war was over, he and
Paula were going to have an
act of their own; she would
write it, he would put it on.
I said with his wife's train
ing and his experience, maybe
the two of them could put It
on together. He hesitated and
then said Paula was a little shy
before the public. I wondered
at this, considering her back
ground but he offered no ex
planation. We were on the bus at the
time and he said I would get to
meet his wife as I changed to
another bus ut the town where
she was to meet him. Every
time he mentioned her name,
which was as often as he could
manage, his voice was prldeful,
loving.
Ae we stepped off the bus
he exclaimed, "Thcro's Paulal"
The1 girl must have seen him
for she started toward us, but
seeing I was with him, she
stopped. I thought, "She's just
the type I'd thought his type
would marry," for she might
have been a Vogue model. , I
can't go into the details which
made her seem so but she was
the last word In dress, hair-do,
general appearance.
And when I understood her
hesitency In meeting the pub
lic for as we drew near, I saw
one ot her eyes was sadly af
fected; surely without sight.
And when she finally spoke,
her speech had the blurred
sound of one whose palate was
not fully developed.
Yet the loving pride there
had been In the young man's
voice as hed Introduced hed
to mel "My wife!" he'd said,
and there bad been vibrancy
