three Negro soldiers, three of
them charged with murder, will
go on trial before a general
courtmartial shortly as an after
math of a raid on an Italian
unit at Fort, Lawton August 14
in which an Italian private was
hanged by a tent rope army au
thortties announced today.
The announcement said that
Cpl. Luther Larkln, 23, Helena
Ark.; Sgt. Arthur J. Hurks, 23
Houston. Tex. and Pvt. William
G. Jones, 21, Decatur, III., will
be charged with murder and
rioting, and that the other 40
soldiers will be charged only
with rioting.
The Oberltn Grade School,

ter from her husband , ship s
cook, lecond class, Earl Gibson,
who is attached to an overseas
unit of Seabees. Gibson enclosed
two clippings on the question
"What is a Seabee?"
Thn article described a Sea-
bee as "a soldier in a sailor's
uniform with marine training
and doing civilian work at WPA
wages." The article continued,
"smashed barrooms and broken
heads from Providence to Pelellu
rove that the Seabees demand
respect from the other services
and from civilians. Not that the
Seabees are tough, they're ingen
ious. They'll use anything that
comes at hand for a weapon,
The article stated primary
function ot the organization is
construction and maintenance of
facilities at advanced bases,
Thorough military training has
equipped them to fjght If neces
sary, and it often has been neces
sary.
Gibson was employed at Med
ford Hotel before joining the
Seabees. A sister, Mrs. R. V. Sut
ton, resides at 810 King street.

Observations
She had the dark curvesome
lovllncss characterlstie of many
girls of Italian ancestry. Her
husband, she said, had been in
the service two years; she hadn't
seen him for nine months. No
use to send him a frantic wire,
as I have done to my husband,
telling him she was so homesick
she couldn't stand it another
mlnuta and for him to come at
once. In a world at war, home
sickness had no part. You Just
fought it out on your pillow
through sleepless hours at night
and dulled it with work during
the day.
In the evening, you spilled it
out on many sheets of paper,
telling him how you missed him;
how you missed making the
coffee strong because he liked
it that way; missed being mad
at him over the way he left his
clothes scattered about;, missed
going to sleep with your head
on his shoulder. And then you
tors up the letter and wrote an
other telling about the gang at
the store where you worked
and the funny thing the boss
had said; and the new dress
you'd bought. Stuff like that;
stuff that wouldn't make him as
homesick as you were.
"It's the week ends that get
me down," she told me. "Tony
and I always went somewhere
together Saturday night. Some
times we'd go with another
couple but lots of times he and
I have gone to a dance where
we didn't know a soul and Just
danced together.
Sometimes my girl friend
and I go out. We don't dare go
alone; too many wolves," was
her succinct explanation. "My
girl friend's husband Is In the
army too and sometimes we
wonder if the boys feel as we
do; or If they're having a won
derful time with some other
girls. But we don't wonder
that too much or maybe we'd
do something we'd be ashamed
of just to get even. And that
would be silly, for we aren't
sure there's anything to get
even for. Yet some girls go out
and do the craziest things that
they really have no heart for,
just to even up the score with
what they are afraid their hus
bands are doing. Then they
write the boys what a wonder
ful time they've had. But for
me, there can't be any wonder
ful times until Tony comes
back. Maybe I'm a goon," she
added laughing shakily, "but
that's how it is.
She left the restaurant booth
on that, one girl in several mil
lion who won't have a "wonder
ful time" until their Tonys come
back.

The supreme court today refused
to consider the case of Rowena
Thornton, Jehovah's Witness of
Portland, Ore., who was fined
$25 for permitting her 11-year-old
daughter to distribute relig
ious literature in violation of a
Portland municipal ordinance.
Appealing from an Oregon su
preme court verdict affirming
her conviction, Mrs. Thornton
contended that the ordinance
was unconstitutional because it
abridges the right to "freedom of
worship of both her and her
daughter.
