The Double Cluster
Br J. Hugh Pruett
Astronomer, General Extension
Division, University of Oregon
The astronomy students had
finished their work at the ob
servatory and all had gone their
devious ways Into the night.
Alone under the stars, we had
put away ar.d locked most ot
the telescopes all excepting one
when came the desire to take
a last fond look at the object
over which the young people
had most enthused during the
evening. This was the splendid
double cluster of tiny stars in
the constellation of Perseus.
The Perseus cluster to the un
aided eye is a dim nebulous
spot midway between the prin
cipal stars of the groups Cas
siopeia and Perseus. At about 8
p. m. at this time ot year this
cluster may be easily located.
Trace from straight overhead
a short distance down toward
the northeast. Soon we come to
five fairly-bright stars arranged
m the form of a rather awk
ward letter W. This is Cassiopeia.
Still lower, three stars in
slightly curved line mark the
body of Perseus. Between these
groups in a region of only dim
stars, good eyes on clear moon
less nights may detect a small,
faint, cloudy patch truly an
unpretentious object.
What a complete transforma
tion la the telescopic sight! The
circular field of view is alive
with glittering little stars, dozens
and scores of them, most ot
which are in two charming clus
ters near opposite rides of the
field. Some appear quite bright,
others dim, still others such
mere pin points ot light on he
background of dark blue that
they go and come at intervals.
On good twinkling nights, their
rapid scintillations remind one of
a iwarm of very busy pees,
Every one ot them Is working
hard, even the tiniest, energeti
cally trying to do its bit in the
program of the mighty universe,
One of the clusters is especial
ly fascinating. In its center are
two stars, much brighter than
the others, which give the ap
pearance of a rather wide
double. Very close to one of
these there Is a very small half
circle of faint stars in a very
delicate pattern on the other
side a tangled mass of tiny stars.
When the air is very clear and
the observer watches' carefully
the beauty of this picture, Is en
hanced by tht irregular appear
ance now and then throughout
n, o ormir, nf the tiniest of the
tiny stellar points, as though
sharp needles were pricking the
r-urtntn of nittht and letting
through the merest Intimations
of the infinite light "beyond the
stars."
Observations
An aimless walk taken early
this morning finally led me to a
a street lined with ramshackle
houses. Steps were missing or
broken; window blinds hung
askew, curtains were limp and
dirty and unnecessary as no one
could have seen through the
film-covered window panes
Porch floors had missing boards
and brovn paint scaled from the
walls like dandruff from a dirty
man's bald head.
Then I saw the doorl A golden
door, a new door; varnished and
with Its glass ashine, its brass
letter slot glinting In the sun
Compared to neighboring doors,
it wag like a gold tooth in a set
of snagged and decaying molars,
Almost I knocked on the magni
ficent new door to see what
manner ot person lived behind
it; almost but not quite. There
are some lengths to which even
I won t go.
Along the window ledge of a
nearby apartment was a row of
gay bits of pottery. There was
pathos in this reaching out for
beauty; as there always Is to me
In the rows of scraggly house-
plants potted In old tin cans one
sometimes sees on floathouses
repellanl with demp decay
Those small potteries were, to
this tenement dweller, a substi
tute for the growing things
which conditions perhaps denied
her.
Yet another window; a win
dow where hung a square of
white on which were five blue
stars. For all I knew the boys
those stars represented might
that very moment be represent
ing me on some battlefield,
muddy and tired and hungry
even wounded. For all I knew
one might even then be passing

Just then, as though It had
been planned to have it so,
church bells rang from a dis

come. And because I am ot the

one: promises to the five who'd
