Indiana roared into action In
the opening period to crack the
vaunted Buckeye line by" air and
ground and score a quick touch
down. But the Buckeyes' line
found itself and sparked by Les
Horvath, the Buckeyes' running
and passing ace, Ohio State

NAVY POWER TOO
MUCH FOR IRISH,
DEFEATJED32 T0 13
Penalties Costly For Notre
'. Dame In First College
Loss Since 1942.
Baltimore, Md., Nov. 4 (U.R)
Navy, displaying all the poise,
depth and power in the football
book, became the 1944 giant
killers of gridiron today when
for the second week In a row it
toppled a team from the ranks
of the nation's undefeated
elevens this time Notre Dame,
32 to 13.
It was the first time since
Nov. 22, 1942, that Notre Dame
has been beaten by a college
team. That club was Michigan,
which downed the Irish 33 to
20. Since then the Irish had drop
ped only two other games both
to service elevens.
But when they did end their
collegiate string, it was to a team
that had everything. Navy's
tackling was sure. Its blocking
fierce and its hard hitting' backs
drilled through a line that had
permitted only two of five op
ponents to score all season.
The difference was In the line
for the Middles never permitted
the Notre. Dame backs to get
net by their hard charging and
Dottled up Bob Xelly, the Wild
Irish Rose of Notre Dame, so
effectively, that he gained only
39 yards.
The game was only five plays
old when Kelly punted to Bar
ron, one of the brilliant Navy
backs, who fumbled and Angs-
man recovered for Notre Dame
on the Navy 19. Dancewicz
whose forward passing gave the
Middies their only trouble, threw
one to Kelly that carried to the
Navy five. Kelly picked up four
at center and Angsman then car
ried the ball over, but the play
was called back and Notre Dame
penalized five yards for a man
in motion.
That was all the spur Navy
needed even though the Irish
came right back to threaten
again when they partially block
ed an attempt by John Hansen
to punt Navy out of trouble. The
Irish recovered the punt on the
wavy Z3 and Dancewicz passed
to Sullivan, Irish end, On the
Navy 15. But that piny also was
called back and Notre Dame
penalized 15 yards for holding
If those two penalties broke
the Irish back, it also gave the
Navy the confidence it needed,
for the Middles started moving
right after that.
They knocked down four
Irish passes and then punted out
of danger. Soon they were on
their way to the first of their
five touchdowns.
