HELP ALLIES IN
INVASION PLANS
New York 4U.R) Sixteen mil
lion maps weighing more than
100 tons were in allied hands
before a soldier set foot on Nor
mandy on D-day. Col. Edgar W.
Barbisch, army engineer for the
New York district, revealed in a
recent address to graduating en
gineers at New York university.
There were battle maps as
large as ZVi Inches to the mile,
and for the invasion beaches the
charts Were scaled 12 inches to
the mile. Col. Garblsch revealed.
There were profile maps of
beaches, with tidal charts so
carefully reckoned that it was
possible to locate the exact spot
a landing craft would touch bot
tom at any time of day, he said
The herculean mapping task
was cleaned up by army engin
eers, who discovered early In the
war that the only available maps
of northwestern Europe dated
back to Napoleon's day. Working
on the military truism that good
maps win battles and poor maps
lose them, the engineers put 600
beaches on paper.
Having charted the actual and
hundreds more potential courses
to Berlin, the army engineers
pitched into the Job of getting
there. Col. Garblsch told his
audience.
Observations
My son laughed at me, over
some of the funny little notes
and letters I'd written my moth
er as a child and which she'd
saved and lately returned to me.
But I'll get back at him by sav
ing some he wrote when he was
six or seven. Then In time it will
be his son's turn to laught at
him. For the boyish scrawl went,
so far as I could deciper, like
this: "Dere Grandma: I gust got
bak from Sundy school. Are
techer give ug eetch a lltle candy
rabut and a ester egg apeese.
I am not goin to eat the rabut
for a long long time but the

Of late,' my mother often
sends little things she's saved
for sentimental reasons. She
feels her time with us grows
shorter.

to be an old man; Just no sense
in making up a body's mind to
die young, like mother nasi Yet
personally, I like mother's plac
ing in my keeping some article
or paper which she feels should
be, of increasing value as the
grandchildren and great-grand,
children come along. I accept
these almost as a sacred charge
It's a feeling about "family" 1
think most women have though
I'v8 seen fcw men who did, so
far as I could tell.
The term "red coat" was a
hateful word through my school
days. Yet here is my English
great uncle Oliver Chapman
wearing, In his picture, the scar
let coat of the British soldier!
His round little pillbox cbd is
set at a cocKey slant, the band
nowing it in place ev dent v be-
ing held with his teeth, for the
picture so shows it. His red coat
is buttoned to his chin and the
dark trousers have wide light
Danas aown the outside. His at
titude, I have to admit, la de

arrogant angle well it is no

Liheir frames, piled his posses-

suring his groundkeepers and
the neighboring Prussian vil

vulnerable. . The Goering lodge formerly
was owned by the Hohenzollerni

Wllhelm II and Field Marshal
