Germans are showing signs of
preparins to abandon Salonika,
Greek port toward which they
have been heading sinco they
retired from Athens, 1G0 miles
to the south, and the city Is cov
ered with smoke from their
demolitions, RAF officials re
ported today.
Under harassing attacks of
allied planes and Greek patriots,
the Germans have been moving
steadily toward Salonika. Where
they intend to go from there is
not clear, as Russian and Yugo
slav partisan forces control most
of the escape routes through the
Balkans and the royal navy and
air force dominate the Aegean,
the eastern Mediterranean and
the Adriatic.
RAF reconnaissance showed
that Germon evacuation trains
have left Katerini, halfway be
tween Salonika and Larissa,
allied-held city 80 miles to thei
southwest, after blowing up it
tunnel at Iroklion on the east
coast 20 miles south of Katerini.
Naval authorities announced
today that allied forces had
larded on the island of Piscopl
in the Dodecanese within 25
miles of Rhodes, where an esti
mated 4,000 Germans are isolat
ed with little hope of escape or
rescue. The troops landed
Thursday night and early Fri
day from the Britich cruiser
Sirius.
