VALLEY SOLDIER
Word was received yesterday
by Mrs. Walter Miller that her
husband, Pvt. Walter Miller, Jr..
of Sams Valley, has been award
ed the purple heart for wounds
received in a battle In New
Guinea.
Pvt. Miller wrote that, some
time In June, he was sent on a
combat patrol and was ambush
ed. He wrote "A few moments
later a fellow was hit and there
were several of us who, under
machine gun fire, crawled for
ward and brought him out. Later
we went back In again." The
citation read "While serving as
wire man and telephone opera
tor with a forward party, Pvt.
Miller advanced In direct line
wllh heavy enemy fire to rescue
a wounded soldier. Having suc
cessfully evacuated the man, he
returned to aid In an attack
that wiped out enemy machine
gun positions." . .
Pvt. Miller stated that he was
hit In the hands with a hand
grenade but did not say how
badly he was wounded.
It had been previously an
nounced that Pvt. Miller had
been awarded the silver star.
Pvt. Miller was Inducted at
Fort Lewis, Wash., In March,
1943. He was trained at Camp
Roberts, Calif., and was sent
overseas In June of the same
year. His wife resides at Mer
rick's Motor Inn, Medford.
