Stockmen of the Applegate
district, report deer hunters
have killed at least two steers
on the range and the ranchers
fear there may be more losses.
The stockmen do not know
whether the known dead steers
were killed by design or acci
dent. Edwin Kubll of the Apple
gate reports there has always
been close co-operation between
stockmen of that area and hunt
ers and he is loath to believe
the killings were on purpose. .
Deer often feed with cattle
at night. There have been re
ports of "sijot light" hunters in
the section, and they may have
killed the steers in mistake for
deer at night, stockmen say.

rally today after an early de
cline had extended the late
break of the previous session.
Trading was active.
Railroad shares as a group
were a leader on the upside.
The recovery movement was
interpreted in Wall street as pos
sible indication that yesterday's
"political" break may have been
too severe. Selling in the final
hour was attributed almost
wholly to announcement that
Senator Ball, Republican, Min
nesota, and Russell Davenport,
1940 supporter of Wendell Will
kie, would support President
Roosevelt for re-election.

Roy Shawcross, northwest
technical representative of the
alien property custodian, will be
in Mediord Thursday in order
to talk to representatives of
local industries to explain the
alien patent program, it was an
nounced today. Mr. Shawcross
will be at the Chamber of Commerce.
It Is stated that the represen
tative will have with him lists
and copies of patents which may
be of interest to business men.
Last year the railroads han
dled passenger traffic nearly
four times that of 1940, and this
year's travel currently exceeds
that of 1943.
