CLEVELAND BLAST
RUINS 50 BLOCKS,
DEATHTOLL HIGH
Volunteers Search Wrecked
Buildings For Bodies
Red Cross Aids.
Cleveland, Oct. 21 U.(0 The
death toll continued to mount
tonight as firemen searched the
ruins of a 50-block area on
Cleveland's east side In an ef
fort to find the charred remains
of additional victims of a holo
caust that was expected to claim
more than 100 lives.
The devastated area, embrac
ing approximately 165 buildings
of nearly all types, was virtual
ly leveled by the blaze that
started yesterday when a gas
storage tank exploded like a
flame-thrower at the East Ohio
Gas Company plant.
'J Coroner Samuel Gerber an
nounced that 75 persons were
known to have perished In the
fire and he added that the toll
probably would exceed 100
when a thorough search of all
wrecked buildings was complet
ed, probably by tomorrow.
There were 51 bodies, includ
ing those of two children and
several women, at the morgue
and at least 13 were identified.
The others were burned beyond
recognition, many merely a
panful of charred bones. Bodies
of the other 24 victims were
still at the scene.
Led by Coroner Gerber, 80
volunteer workers were con
ducting a systematic search of
the debris, but still-burning fires
and red-hot bricks and walls
kept them away from some
parts of the area.
The fire was the mose devas
tating in the city's 148-year his
tory. Besides the persons burn
ed to death and the buildings
destroyed, more than 100 auto
mobiles and other valuable
properties were wrecked. Un
official estimates placed the
damage at close' to $10,000,000.
A total of 214 persons were
hospitalized but most were dis
charged after treament, while
another 200 were renorted as
probably injured to a lesser de-j
gree. Doctors and nurses in all j
of Cleveland's hospitals, which i
were jammed with fire victims,
worked valiantly to save the
lives of two persons reported
critically burned and hurt.
Meanwhile, the community
aided by the Red Cross mar
shalled all of its forces to pro
vide food, shelter and clothing

area were housed at Will

Nearly 300 members of the
Ohio state guard assisted police

BEAR CREEK VOTE
That Governor Dewey prom
ises to defeat President Roose
velt and run ahead of the Willkie
majority of four years ago in
Medford Is indicated by a straw
ballot at Bear Creek Orchards
packing plant. The ballot was
taken as part of the program fol
lowing the annual Bear Creek
dinner, which was attended by
250 employees. Stunts, music,
talks and the presentation of
gifts were also included on the
program.
Four years ago the vote at
Bear Creek ,wa?: Roosevelt, . 75;
Willkie. 25.
This year the vote is Roose
velt, 123; Dewey 118.
In other words President
Roosevelt defeated Willkie four
years ago by 50 votes, a ratio of
exactly three to one, while this
year Roosevelt barely noses out
Dewey by five votes in a total of
241 cast.
Four years ago Wendell Will
kie carried the county by ap
proximately 1400 votes, so if this
straw ballot Is an accurate index
of the situation this year Gov
ernor Dewey's majority should
exceed 3000.

PHYSICIANS EYE
PENICILLIN USE
Sacramento, Oct. 21 (U.R)
Penicillin may be used to com
bat a kidney infection which to
night had complicated an attack
of influenza that sent Gov. Earl
Warren to the hospital Tuesday
night, his physician, Dr. J. B.
Harris, said.
Dr. Harris said the drug was
ready but he and Dr. Nathan G.
Hale, consulting specialist, had
not reached their decision wheth
er to administer it.
Dr. Harris added that the gov
ernor's blood count was some
what lower than when the in
fection was discovered at noon
Saturday.
The physician added that there
was no cause for alarm over
Governor Warren's condition,
"although he is a pretty sick
man and will be in the hospital
for some time."
Dr. Harris said the governor's
temperature had been held at
normal during the past two days
except for a temporary upsurge
to . 101 Friday night, but that
Warren's strength had been sap
ped by a tendency to perspire
heavily at night. It was neces
sary to change his bedding com
pletely four times Friday night
Harris said,
