By Carl Lundqulit
United Press Correspondent
New York, Oct. 20 AIM The
road ahead for the nation's pre
mier football teams was due to
get rougher than a cross country
jeep ride this week-end when,
with the little obstacles out of
the way, they encounter their
most formidable opposition to
date.
The schedule Is limited, but
tho quality excellent, with every
section offering an array of
games strictly in the toss-up cate
gory.
The number one game In the
country is at Atlanta, Ga., where
the cream team of the south
land, Georgia Tech puts Its per
fect record on the line against
the Navy Midshipmen, reported
Iy chafing at the chain and
ready to unleash the power that
thus far has- been practically a
military secret. Odds are even
with plenty of support on both
sides.
Great Lakes Plays
Practically the same situation
prevails at Columbus, O., where
Lt. Paul Brown brings his Great
Lakes Naval Bluejackets back
to play the unbeaten Ohio State
Buckeyes, the team he projected
Into the national spotlight be
fore going into the service. Great
Lakes is unbeaten but tied and
rates a bare edge over the Buck
eyes in the midwest's top game.
There are a number of other
games rated as even as Polly

Tennessee vs Alabama in a meet

Georgia Pre-Flight also likely
I to be a tossup. Iowa State bat

Colorado in a Rocky Mountain

From then on It was wide open

UCLA POTENTIAL'
CANDIDATES FOR
ROSEiOWL PLAY
Bruins To Be Hit Lightly In
. Shift of Navy Personnel;
Service Teams Play.
By Gene Friedman
United Press Staff Correspondent
Los Angeles, Oct. 20 U.R)
Maybe lt doesn t make sense to
figure that a team could go
through the entire first half of
its season and win Just one game
and still be a potential candi
date for the New Year's day
Rose Bowl football game. But
that was the situation with the
Bruins of the University of Cali
fornia at Los Angeles today and
there is enough of a story that
goes with it for it to develop
a degree of logic.
Bruins Said Strong
The Bruins broke into the
winners' circle for the first time
last week end when they gave
St. Mary s civilians a thorough
drubbing and when it was over
Coach Jimmy Phelan of the los
ers tabbed them as stronger than
either California or Southern
California.
Their opportunities will be
better from now on when the
California members of the Pa
cific coast meet in the second
go-around of their wartime
schedules.
For one thing, when the navy
shuffles its personnel about
after completion of training
courses next week, the Uclans
will suffer fewer losses than
either California or Southern
California. Although they will
lose their left halfback, Johnny
Roesch, who has done most of
their scoring, they have two
other good running backs in Vic
Smith and Jack Boyd. Moreover,
they have a big tackle, Sleepy
Markham, now ineligible, who is

are growing three billion feet more every year.

The Bruins get another chance
to redeem themselves this week
end against St. Mary's Preflight,
but the big game on the coast
won't be until Monday night
when the Washington Huskies
get their chance for revenge
against Southern California for
the thorough drubbing they took
in the Rose Bowl last January 1.
Southern California, tested
against major opposition, prob
ably will be the favorite since
Washington's schedule thus far
has consisted of four warmup
games, two each with Willam
ette and Whitman.
. Service Teams Rate
In a Sunday standout between
service elevens, the March Field
Fourth Air Force Fliers and the
El Toro Marines meet and the
winner is likely to be rated on
a par with any military post
team in the country. Such stars
as Indian Jack Jacobs of Okla
homa, Bob De Fruiter of Ne
braska, Vic Spadaccinl of Min
nesota, Fred Davis of Alabama
and Dick Barwegan of Purdue
for the Fliers and Cliff Battles,

Dartmouth, Bob Dove of Notre

Tulane, for the Marines.
