Camp White Dance
Enjoyed by Throng
Of GIs and Girls
Camp White, Oct. 17 Post
mortems on last night's formal
autumn dance Frankie Mas
ter's bandsmen, who get around
and should know, were lavish
in their praise of Rogue River
valley girls, agreeing that they
had seen more pretty girls at
last night's dance than In many
a moon the autograph kids
were out in force, and it was a
constant parade to the band
stand. As usual the Ashland and
Riverside USO's and the Mar
Kade did a splendid job of pro
viding girls, all of whom were
looking too, too sweet in their
trim formals young Eddie Wil
liams, Masters' vocalist, who
has just turned 17, had the
younger set dreamy eyed.
twirls, who expected to see a
handful of soldiers, were sur
prised at the deluge of GI's
Masters expressing delight at
the nice looking crowd and
the crowd returning the senti
ment by a constant applause for
the band, which will soon make
a movie short in Hollywood.
Flight of Cranes
Assure Japs All
Well at Formosa
By United Press
The Japanese people, Ra
dio Berlin suggested today,
received their first assur
ance that everything was go
ing well at Formosa from a
flight of cranes over the
Imperial palace in Tokyo.
The cranes, considered a
good luck omen in Japan,
fiew over the palace Just as
the "great victory" of For
mosa was being announced,
Berlin said, adding that all
Tokyo took the flight as a
sign of good luck In the next
stage of the battle.
P. S. The "great vic
tory" of Formosa cost Japan
almost 900 planes and the
loss of Formosa's three main
air bases.

Artificial Harbors Helped
Landings On Normandy Beach
London. Oct. 17 (U.P The
greatest seaborne engineering
feat in military history took
place off the American and Brit

gining five hours after the D-day
landings the erection of seven
miles of artificial harbors.
The harbors, containing near
ly 600,000 tons of concrete and
50.000 tons of steel, were con
structed in England and towed
piece by piece across the chan
nel. Story Bottled
Stories of this tremendous and
almost inconceivable feat, which
was credited largely with suc
cess of the invasion, were re
leased by censorship for the first
time today.
The size of the task can be
imagined as comparable to build
ing the Mobile, Ala., harbor at
New Orleans and then towing it
into position.- Moreover, these
harbors were built under the
nose of the enemy.
They were put to use for un
loading seagoing vessels along
lonely stretches of French
beaches where little more than
rowboats ever had discharged
cargoes before.
The British harbor worked
fully but the American harbor,
which was laid by Capt. Augus
tus Clarke of the U. S. navy,
was hit by heavy storm which
bypassed the British one.
The storm smashed tops of the
concrete caissons, tumbled tons
of steel as if they were play-

later that the storm had a 10
per cent effect on the harbor.
Churchill Aided
The Idea for the harbors was
partly that of Prime Minister
Winston Churchill, who helped
work out the plans in 1942.
They involved building on
partly charted shoals, ports
where a minimum of 12,000 tons
a day could be unloaded for at
least 90 days more than the ca
pacity of all French harbors
which might be captured in that
time.
The services of 20,000 men
were required to build the mas
sive concrete and steel piers.
The whole layout was towed
over by tugboats by D-day plus
five and included 60 ships, rang
ing up to the ancient 25,500-ton
British battleship Centurion,
which were sunk deliberately in
lines as block ships.
