BIKER LAUDS
State Leading Way- Choos
ing Able Men For Con
gress, Candidate States
Republican Vice Presidential
Candidate John W. Bricker,
speaking here Friday evening
from the rear platform of his
special train, declared himself
delighted with the reception ac
corded his party in Oregon. Ap
proximately 1,500 people gath
ered at the depot to see and hear
the Ohio governor and the many
favorable comments heard as
the train departed Indicated both
the candidate and Mrs. Bricker,
whom he introduced at the out
set, had made a very favorable
impression.
Bricker complimented Oregon
on its high type of representa
tion in congress, asserting that
"there will be many important
adjustments to be made follow
ing the war and these can only
come through sincere, honest ap
plication by those in positions of
leadership. This state is point
ing the way in this respect. You
have developed leaders in con
gress. Your senator (Cordon) has
had experience and you have
nominated a second able man
(Wayne Morse) along with him.
Your congressman from this dis
trict (Harris Ellsworth) has not
only had experience in congress
but has made it his business to
study the people of other coun
tries, our allies, and has per
sonally contacted them to better
qualify himself to serve you.
And when Tom Dewey becomes
president of the nited States he
will need the services of Sen
ators Cordon and Morse and
Congressman Ellsworth to help
him in organizing the majority
of the congress next year."
Renaissance Cited
Referring to the republican
Renaissance, Bricker said "When
I became governor of Ohio there
were eight Republican gover
nors. Five of them attended the
first conference of governors to
which I went and we hardly
dared open our mouths. But in
six years we have gained until
we have 26 Republican gover
nors and in those 26 states
two-thirds of the people of the
United States live and three
quarters of the industry exists.
It only takes 20 of those states
if you will let us pick the right
ones to elect a Republican
president. I think we already
have them picked, but I also
think we are going to get all 26
of them.
"New leadership Is necessary
to keep a nation strong and
virile. The problems which are
ever-changing demand new lead
ership. The 26 governors have
re-established the Republican
party in the minds of the peo
ple. Your Governor Snell has
done a good job in this respect
and he holds the confidence and
respect of governors of both
parties. In fact, if the Demo
cratic governors were free to
speak their real convictions
about half of them would be in
the Republican party this year.
"Congressman Ellsworth and
Senator Cordon can tell you that '
in important issues dealing with
fundamental principles of our
government. Democratic sen
ators and congressmen are com
ing over to the Republicans to
save the representative system
of government. Not only are
they coming over, but bringing
with them millions of loyal, pa
triotic Democrats to vote the Re
publican ticket this year.
Democrats Switch
"Everywhere and at every
meeting, Democrats come to us
and say, 'We are joining the Re
publicans. We have been life
long Democrats. We believe in
the liberal system of govern
ment we have been fighting for
for generations, but we cannot
stand the New Deal. We' are
coming to your side. You are
fighting the battle of liberal gov
ernment.' "When the Ickes, the Hop
kinses, the Frankfurters, the
Rosenmans and the Wallaces
took over the old Democratic
party they threw away the plat
form of economy within two or
three months. The only economy
they put into effect was the
economy by which veterans of
our wars suffered. They took
$450,000,000 away from them.
"There is a great need today
for a change in Washington. A
house cleaning is imminent.
There is nothing today that
would so inspire American
business, that would so encour
age American labor, that would
so thrill the men that are fight
ing for America, as a Republi
can victory this fall."
Party Leaders Aboard
A number of prominent state
and southern Oregon party lead
ers had boarded the special at
points further north to confer
with the Bricker party during
the balance of the run through
the state. They included Sen
ator Cordon and Representative
and Mrs. Ellsworth, Mr. and
Mrs. Niel Allen and Marshall
Cornett and from Jackson
county, Mrs. Bertha Coy Ross,
Mrs. C. Q. d'Albini, Ralph E.
Koozer and Frank VanDyke.
Senator Cordon continued on
to Ashland with the special and
returned here for an informal
reception later. Representative
and Mrs. Ellsworth returned to
Roseburg on the northbound
train at 7 o'clock.
H ow to Pick Ducks
Easy As Chickens
Most hunters will admit that
picking a wild duck is hard
work. Two Great Falls, Mont.,
newspaper men found an "easy
way to do the job in only eight
minutes per bird," according to
a clipping furnished by Claude
Holmes, General Petroleum dis
tributor in Medford.
The men merely boiled water
and added a "commercial auto
mobile wash," such as Sovasuds
Car Wash, in the proportion of
six ounces of wash to two gal
lons of water. They dipped the
duck in the mixture and the
preparation penetrated the oily
covering of feathers. "There
upon," quoting the Great Falls
men, "the ducks pick Just like
chickens." ,
