Self Confidence
America's Need
Johnson Avers
Chicago, Oct. 13. (U.R) Eric
Johnston, president of the U. S.
Chamber of Commerce, believes
that the United States "needs
faith in itself and faith in its
productive capacity."
Johnston told a meeting of the
Ingersoll Die and Disc Casting
Co., at its 60th anniversary cele
bration last night that "many
who seek in the ideological
debris of other nations for the
solution to the present state of
world problems might well look
to the United States."
"If we can't solve our prob
lems, the rest of the world will
go down to Davy Jones locker
with us," Johnston said.

Female Negroes
Gabble While
Fire Crackles
Tlllicum, Wash., Oct. 13 (U.R)
Flames racked merrily through
a Tillicum building while two
unidentified female Negroes held
a lengthy debate over which
fire department to call.
One woman held out for the
brigade in near-by Tacoma,
while the opposition contended
that the matter should be
handled by the local blaze-busters.
The first woman overrode
her opponent's veto and called
the Tacoma department.
"Sorry," the fire truck dis
patcher answered. "That's out
side our territory."
The second woman stepped
smugly to the phone and sum
moned the district fire engine,
which arrived forthwith.
The house, garage and adjac
ent workshop $4,500 worth
were a heap of smouldering
ashes.
Sweetheart Hears ,
Shot on Telephone
As Lover Suicides
Chicago, Oct. 13 (U.R) Harry
V. Hogans, 54, wealthy lumber!
firm executive, shot himself to
death in his hotel room last night '
while his sweetheart who re-i
fused to marry him listened over
the telephone. '
Mrs. Jeanette Tees, 38, told
police that Hogans telephoned '
her and threatened to kill him-1
self if she refused to marry him. I
"People who threaten to kill j
themselves seldom do," she said!
she replied.
"They don't?" Hogans said.
"Listen to this." i
She heard a loud report, she
said, and called the hotel to send
I a bellboy to his room. The bell
hop found his body stretched
across the bed with a revolver in
one hand and the telephone in
. the other.

Chicago (U.R) 'Too much
make-up, too much jewelry, too
many furs, and those huge
flowers they wear. Some 'of
them look like t well-kept
grave," is the way Henri de
Chattillon, Parisian fashion de
signer, described American wo
men, as he stopped here enroute
to Mexico City,
He believes, however, that
the American woman is the
most beautiful of all in face and
in form. But "she does not wear
her beauty well, except for a
chic few." Her dress should be
shorter, with softer lines, and
more feminine appeal. Her hats,
according to Henri, are atro
cious." Slacks made de Chattillon feel
"sick all over and positively
livid with shame."
There was nothing drab about
Henri as he talked about wom
en's fashions, wearing a pink
shirt, wine-red tie, and navy
blue suit, and with a brilliant
fuschia hat streaked with purple
blue lying on the dresser.
De Chattillon favors simple,
graceful gowns with broad hats
to shade the face. "Even a young
face gains if it is shaded a little,"
he said. "That horrible off-the-face
hat Is passing away forever,
thank goodness. It was just too
revolting!"
The men In America are en
tirely too conventional for
Henri, who would like to see
collarless shirts, lapelless coats
and brighter colors in suitings
even pink or baby blue, which,
he said, "I could wear with per
fect insouciance, so long as the
whole ensemble is harmonious."
Nothing can be done about
women's bathing suits, he said,
shrugging his shoulders. A de
signer's business is to conceal
artfully, and you can conceal
nothing in a bathing suit. "Some
women," de Chattillon said,
"Just should not go bathing."
