T
Encouraging of Casual Male
May Lead to Rape or
Death, Says Medic.
By Dorothy Williams
United Press Correspondent
Washington, Oct. 13 (U.R)
A woman physician, who has
counselled thousands of govern
ment girls, declared today that
mothers should make it clear to
their daughters that they are
only "begging for trouble when
they kiss" or otherwise encour
age casual male acquaintances.
The physician, who asked
that her name be withheld,
made her recommendation in
endorsing the contention of Mrs.
Franklin D. Roosevelt that par
ents should give teen age daugh
ters "a little more real knowl
edge" or keep them at home.
Snood Slaying Cited
Their remarks were occasion
ed by Washington's "snood slay
ing," the rape-murder last week
of 18-year-old Dorothy Berrum,
who came here from Chippewa
Falls, Wis., to take a job as a
War Department typist - clerk.
Held in the case is Earl McFar
land, 21-year-old marine, who
reportedly "picked up" the vic
tim on a downtown street cor
ner. "Parents should advise their
daughters of the reasons for the
'don'ts' they preach," the phy
sician said. "They should see
that their daughters receive an
adequate sex education either
from them or some competent
person.
"Mothers don't make their
daughters realize, for instance,
that the sexual urge doesn't stop
with kissing," she said. "They
don't give them a scientific ex
planation of the part sex plays
in all life."
By permitting a man to pick
her up, a girl is encouraging
him to believe she would not re
sist further attention, the physi
cian continued. And when she
goes with him to some secluded
place, she added, she is obvi
ously encouraging him further.

crime as this is, of course, a
psychopathic personality, but
the girls should be warned that
there are such persons in the
world," the physician said.
Major Edward J. Kelly, Wash
ington police superintendent,
also warned against "pick-ups."
"We can not take care of
women if they won't use good
sense and take care of them
selves." he said.
"We do everything in our
power to make the city safe for
women and we have kept our
crime record low, but we can
not assign a policewoman to
protect every girl in Washing
ton.
Both the physician and Kelly
took issue with the charge ol
Ray H. Everett, executive secre
tary of the social hygiene soci-
ity, that the government is fall
ing down in its job of caring foi
girl employes.
"The government provides a
multitude of social outlets for
its girl workers," the physician
said. "There are carefully or
ganized dances, hikes, state par
ties and all sorts of athletic and
educational groups. Every agen
cy has someone a girl can talk
to if she is ill or unhappy."
