I've always said that In marry
ing, hearts Is the winning suite,
not diamonds. But lately
I liked her right from the first;
liked the way she carried her
slim lithe body; liked the persis
tent laughter in the brown eyes
and especially liked the way
they'd sort of glow when she
spoke of her three children.
Now In her late 20's, she was
left a widow several years ago.
Her life since then hasn't been
an easy one, what with being on
her Job six days a week, picking
up the children at a friend's
house on the way home and then
flying Into housework, getting
supper for the four of them, then
seeing the boys had clean blouses

for the next day and the little)
girl a freshly laundered dress.
Changed from slacks to a
house dress, she liked to think
that their evenings, at least, were
much as those they'd have had
had Bill lived. Neighbor children
came In and there were games
and later hot cocoa. Sometimes
she got pretty mad at herself
that the noise hurt her head and
that her laughter at their antics
was forced rather than spontan
eous. Kids had a right to a Jolly
mother.
Then the first thing she kse
there were two men In her life.
Both want to marry her. Thera
Is Bob, s little under her own
age, and Hal. many years her
senior. Though there are tw
men In her life, there Is only one
In her heart Bob It was about
all this that she talked to me, as
sometimes a young woman will
be drawn to do to an older one.
"Just to have Bob near me sets
my heart racing. I hadn't known
I could ever feel that way again.
I'd marry him tomorrow if it
weren't for the children. But
Bob and I would have to start
from scratch and by the time
we got on our feet, they'd be
through school and gone. With
Hal things would be different.
He's older and already has a
successful business. The girl
could take music lessons; the
boys could go to summer camps
with no thought of the expense.
"The kids like to go fishing
with Bob but the little rascals
sure like the trips Hal gives us
and the things he buys for them,
the little gold-diggers," and her
laughter was tender though a
bit shaky. "I like Hal, too He's
kind and thoughtful and I know
he loves me. But, oh. Bob!"
I'm a softy. I still think hearts
are trump.
