Notes on our eountv fnlrt
Never has our fair had so many
sucn beautiful horses as it had
this year. Nor a red-wheeled
cart drawn by a white-stockinged
trotter. The small deft feet of:
tne trotter rose and fell in a
poetry of motion, a flowing
melody of hoof-bent, stirft nnd
swift and Joyous. But the trotter-
can combination was a May
December union. Tho cart was
old and lost the rim of one
wheel. I was sorry for it; as if
it were an old lady who had
thought to have a last fling at
youth only to have her arthritis
overtake her in the middle of
tne dance.
A stockman cxblalned to me
why it was that a young cow
pony wore no bridle but was be
ins CllideH pntirolv n rnn
around its nose (hackainorc). Ha
said the pony was in the first '
stage of its training. After being
taugni to ncck-rcin with the
rope, it would be introduced to
a broken bit. then Inter tn a curh
bit. No true horseman, said the
man, ever jerks the bit of his
mount. A cow nnnv worth Ita
salt doesn't have to be made
obedient.
Calling mv attention tn hl
own pony, he wanted me to
nonce ncr loot work and with
What sweet obedienrn cha r
sponded to the slightest rein
luucnj now quietly she stood,
with no wasting of energy in
useless Jittering about, hoarding
her strength for the time she'd
be called on to put it to legitim
ate use. A pretty girl, to him,
might bo like a melody but even
so, I could see, he'd rate her a
mere obligato compared to a
beautiful cow pony.
He was so taken with this
pony of his, I found myself be
coming almost equally affected;
not with the dapper pony but
with the undapper stockman.
Having my camera along 1 said
let's have our picture taken to
gether and had some rliffirnltv
in convincing him I wanted to
pose wan mm, not the pony.
To free himself of the pony
whose reins he still held, he
handed them to a man named
Leo. Leo was not the Lionheart
his name implied and in great
agitation passed the reins to an
other saying the mere thought of
holding a horse made his heart
Jump to where his chattering
teeth chewed the top of it.
