today it would appear that the
federal government "has gone
too far" in stockpiling tor war
needs.
Dewey told a press conference
that western woolgrowers have

(the stockpile) will have to be
dribbled out over a period of
years, or else it will put the
sheep Industry out of business,"
Dewey said.

have separated. "Our marriage
can be classed as a war casual

Gen. John J. Pershing is con
fined to his bed at Walter Reed
hospital with a cold which was
aggravated, according to his
friends, by over-exertion on his
84th birthday Wednesday.
The general was suffering
from a cold before his birthday,
but did not let It prevent him
from seeing callers and well
wishers 'on Wednesday.
Afterward, however, his cold
became worse, and friends said
he was expected to be in bed
for several days as a precau
tionary measure. They said there

Polio Declining
Is Reassurance
From Dr. Merkel
To quiet the fears of parents
regarding the spread of poli
omyelitis with the approach ol
school opening, Dr. A. E. Mer-1
kcl. county health officer, slat- I
ed today that the disease Is on
the decline over the entire state
and that there ore no cases In
the county at present. The last
case was reported nearly a
month ago and the victim is
now In Portland for treatment,
with progress reported as sat
isfactory. The weekly report of com
municable diseases for the
state shows 11 cases for the
week ending Sept. 9, while 26
cases were reported for the
same week last year. Dr. Mer
kel declared that the disease
has definitely passed Its peak,
report showing a decline for the
past four or five weeks, and
that in all likelihood few cases
would be reported for the re
mainder of the fall.

today and regained all of yes
terday's losses.
Aircrafts led In strength
while Graham-Paige featured
in turnover. American Tele
phone gained more than a point.
Airlines were strong. Several
special issues had gains of more
than 2 points.
Demand for the Aircrafts
was further recognition of the
recent indications that Airlines
will be big buyers of new planes
in the postwar period. Wright
Aero gained 4 po.'nts on a sin
gle sale. Douglas made a new
high at 6B, up 23,4 points.
Lockheed was active and so was
United Alrcrnft. Each of those
issues, plus Grumman Aircraft,
gained more than a point. In
the airline group, American
was up more than a point and
United nearly a point.

after endorsing them.
The interval between labor
day and Christmas Is a time
when the greatest caution is ne
cessary In safeguarding govern
ment checks against theft and
forgery, the service said. The
end of the vacation season, the
peak of the moving season, and
the Imminence of the holiday
season cause a "vast mass activity."

Davis said all Interested par
ties will be given an opportunity
to say what they want to about
the reports submitted to the
WLB yesterday by the basic
steel and American Federation
of Labor panels.
He said the board hoped to
reach its conclusions during the
week of Oct. B 'before elec
tion." He said, however, that any
changed wuge stabilization pol
icy might "be quite different
from the one demanded.'1 In the
case of the United Steel Workers
of America (CIO), he said, the
union demands increased paid
vacations, shift differentials,
time and one-half for overtime
and other issues which could be
granted under the existing pol
icy. He contended that the little
steel formula, which he said was
an Incorrect name for it, vns not
a celling but a floor to wages.
The celling, he satd, was the
president's directive that there
shall be no more general wage
Increases.

DIES IN ARIZONA
Clyde L. Smith, 53, an em
ployee of the city water depart
ment of Medford and a resident
of Butte Falls for nearly 20
years, died early Thursday morn
ing in Phoenix, Ariz., of a heart
attack. The Smiths had moved
to Phoenix less than a month aso
from Jackson county, having ac-1
companied Mr. and Mrs. William
Holloway when the two families
changed their residence from :
Medford to Phoenix. Mr. Smith
had not been ill and his death
came as a great shock to rela
tives and friends.
