The scramble for first place
among the top four American
League clubs got a chance to
cool off today as the Junior cir
cuit teams traveled but In yes
terday's doublehcaders every
body had a chance to gain
ground but none did.
The four contenders, New
York. Detroit, St. Louis and
Boston all split doubleheaders
to keen the status quo, the Yan
kees holding on to first place by
the slender margin of a half
came over Detroit.
Detroit had a chance to take
over the top spot and did for
about two hours by winning
their first lame with Cleveland.
while the Ynnkees were losing
to Boston. Manager Steve
O'Neill sent the best he had af
ter the double win when he fol
lowed Hal Newhouscr's opening
victory with Dizzy Trout, his
other 24-game winner.

Chicago Cubs and St. Louis

hurler to win 21 games when
the Cards scored four runs in
the first Inning for him and went
on to win, 4-2.

7-5. Rookie Arnold Carter won
a 2-0 shutout for the Reds in the
