American task force warships
and carrier aircraft shelled and
bombed the Palau islands In the
western Carolines Wednesday
and Tokyo radio claimed that
500 planes blasted Palau again
Friday while battleships joined
in a bombardment of Yap Island,
reports said Saturday.
Pacific fleet headquarters re
ported the naval and air attack
against Palau, only 000 miles
from the Philippines, and said
other carrier planes hit Yap, 300
miles to the northeast.
Heavy damage to buildings
and defense installations on four
Islands of the Palau group was
caused in the Wednesday attack.
Large fires were left blazing in
the naval attack, carried out by
cruisers and destroyers. No ship
damage was sustained, the an
nouncement said.
Angaur, Palau's southernmost
Isle, was heavily hit and Pele
liu, Koror and Arakabesan
Islands were blasted In the com
bined strike which reached pre
lnvasion softenlng-up intensity.
The Wednesday raid was the
first surface bombardment of the
Palau group which had been at
tacked by a carrier task group
March 30-31.
Koror reportedly is the center
of Japanese military, naval and
political activity in the Palau
islands. The major air base Is
located on Pelcllu and Angaur
is a valuable phosphate pro
ducer.

cure removal of truck tires from
the government vehicles now
being offered for sale.
Oregon truckmen wired Cor
don asking for this so-the tires
con be purchased separately in
Oregon. The Oregon emergen
cy truck tire committee told
Cordon that they understood
that about 3,500 of the 30,000
trucks will be sold in the north
west. With six tires per vehicle
plus one spare there would be
a total of 24,500 tires available
through this channel.
Truckmen feel that the tires
are more essential to transpor
tation todny than the trucks.
The vehicles have been declared
surplus by the government.

Frank Sinatra cooled off a bit
tonight and said maybe things
weren't so bad in Hollywood
now that the weather had
changed.
It was just the heat, he said, ;
which made him want to quit
the movies.
And, as for his neighbors, well,
you can't be neighborly when
the thermometer is 104, he
mused.
"It's easy for a guy to get hot
under the collar, literally and
figuratively, when he's dressed
in a hot suit of navy blues and
the temperature Is 104 degrees
and he's getting over a bad cold
to boot," the big-eared crooner
stated.
Relaxing under a breeze which
waited through Hollywood, cool
ing both the weather and the
Sinatra temperature, the voice
admitted he'd been too hasty
when he said "pictures stink and
most of the people who are In
them do too."
"I think I might have spoken
too broadly about quitting pic
tures and about my feelings to-1
ward Hollywood, he said.
Movie moguls sighed happily
and feminie fens squealed raptu
rously when the voice said sure
he'd be making more movies.

he had implied were "uppity,"
to say the least. ,
