George H. Conant
Wed In Portland
News of the wedding of Miss
Jean Peters, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. John Peters, former
Medford residents, will be of
interest to friends of the bride
and her family. Miss Peters was
married Sunday, August 27, to
George H. Conant of Eugene,
the service taking place in Port
land at the home of a friend,
Miss Alice McCoy.
The bride graduated from
Medford high school where her
record resulted in awarding of
a scholarship to attend the Uni
versity of Oregon. She later at
tended the University of Oregon
Nurses Training school, gradu
ating recently.
Mr. and Mrs. Conant have
taken up residence in Chicago
where the groom, a veteran of
more than two years service in
the South Pacific, will study at
the Chicago Art Institute. Mrs.
Conant plans to continue her
nursing career.
Has Study Meeting
The Adult Missionary Society
of the First Christian church
continued its study of the Amer
ican Indian at a meeting at the
church Wednesday afternoon.
Mrs. C. M. Hon had charge of
the program and Mrs. Walter
Kindred presided over a busi
ness session.
Refreshments were served by
Mrs. Fred Daugherty's group.

Hinmans Leaving
for Oregon City; i
Daughter Is Here
Mrs. E. R. Van Lceuwen of!
Washington, D. C, has arrived
in Medford to spend a few
weeks with her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Lee E. Hinman, 912 West
Tenth street, before their de
parture for Oregon City where
they plan to live in the future.
The Hinmans have built a new
home four miles from Oregon
City on the Clackamas river on
the estate of their son, Laurin
E. Hinman, who is representa
tive for Training Within Indus
try, governmental bureau, for
the four major Pacific coast
states.
The Hinmans have made their
home in the Rogue River valley
for the past 35 years, coming
here from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
They were owners of an orchard
in the Perrydale district for a
time. The Hinmans are leaving
here because of ill health and
both Mr. and Mrs. Hinman have
expressed their deep regret over
their departure.
Mrs. Van Leeuwen will a-l
company her parents when they
leave Medford, Sept. 12, and
will spend several weeks in Ore-,
gon City and Portland before
returning to her home. A tram-1
ber of dinner parties and other i
social affairs are being given
for the Hinmans by their friends. I

Are Arranged for
Former Resident
Mrs. A. J. Loeffler, who ar
rived from Parkville, Mo., a
short time ago to spend several
weeks in Medford and Portland,
has been honored at a number
of informal gatherings since her
arrival. Mrs. Loeffler and her
husband, Lt. Com. Loeffler, for
merly resided here with their
family and have many friends
in the city.
Tonight a number of friends
are gathering at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Diamond Flynn
on Queen Anne avenue in order
to spend the evening with Mrs.
Loeffler. Buffet supper will be
served at 6 o'clock and about
fourteen are expected. Friday
night of last week Mrs. Royal
Clare entertained at two ta
bles of bridge for Mrs. Loef
fler's pleasure, the affair being
at her home, 21 South Wash
ington avenue.
Mrs. A. O. Bauman, 215
North Ivy street, is entertaining
Mrs. Loeffler as her house guest
and one afternoon invited a
small group of friends for
bridge in her honor. One of
the first affairs for Mrs. Loef
fler was a no-host steak dinner
given at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Ernest Scott, 45 Glen Oak
Court.
Over the Labor Day holidays
Dr. and Mrs. A. W. Glutsch, Mr.
and Mrs. Bauman and Mrs.
Loeffler were at Diamond Lake
for an outing.

A shower of gifts was pre
sented Mrs. Lottie Cave at the
regular meeting of Olive Rebck
ah lodge Monday night. Mrs.
Cave is leaving soon to make
her home in San Francisco.
Plans were made for initia
tion the first Monday night in
October. Next meeting of the )
lodge will be bept. 18. Mrs.
Bess Dyer will be chairman of
the social hour and each mem
ber is asked to bring a hat
which she made. These will be
displayed and the best selected.
Mrs. Marie Hansen and a com
mittee will serve refreshments.
Visitors at the meeting last
week were Inez Benton and her
uncle, H. B. Benton, both mem
bers of Blythedale lodge at Mill
City, Calif.

of the marriage of a former
Prospect girl, Berryl Cunning
ham, daughter of Floyd Cun
ningham of Klamath Falls, and
granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Nelson Nye, of Prospect, to El
ton Clarke, formerly of La
Grande, and at the present with
the Naval Air Corps stationed at
the Naval Air Base at Klamath
Falls. The wedding took place
at Klamath Falls, August 7.
Mrs. Clarke was graduated from
Ashland high school, and South
ern Oregon College of Educa
tion, and taught the third grade
in a Klamath Falls elementary
school during the past year.
The newlyweds and Mrs.
Clarke's father, Mr. Cunning
ham, were week end guests at
the home of Mrs. Clarke's
grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Nel
son Nye. and a dinner was given
in their honor, August 27. Cov
ers were placed for the honored
guests, also, Mr. and Mrs. Joe
Phipps, Mr. and Mrs. Waldo
Nye and children, Darlene, Pa
tricia, and Wallace, Ed and Miss

Lady Lions Hold
First Meeting

meetings after the summer va
cation, Lady Lions were enter
tained last Tuesday evening at
the home of Mrs. Clifford Proc
tor, 134 Portland avenue, presi
dent of the group. Assisting host
esses were Mrs. Frank Runtz,
Mrs. Dow Rowe and Mrs. Frank
Cullcn.
Dessert was served at 7:30
o'clock and was followed by a
business meeting and social eve
ning. In attendance at the first

Mrs. Williams Returns
From Trip To Michigan
Mrs. Thomas V. Williams of
Route 4 has returned home from
a three-weeks trip to Marquette,
Mich., where she visited her
mother, Mrs. Ernest Rankin.
Mrs. Williams also spent a
short time in Sioux City, la.,
with her son, Lt. David Wil
liams of the army air corps.
In Chicago she spent a day
with Mrs. Harvey Spalding,
former Medford resident, Mrs.
Spalding coming from her home
in South Bend, Ind., to see Mrs.
Williams. Mrs. Spalding's son,
John R. Spalding, Jr., has been
inducted into the army.
Winninghams Hold
Annual Gathering
At McKee Bridge
. About 50 members of the Win
ningham family held the 13th
annual reunion Sept. 3, the re
union being in the form of a pic
nic at McKee bridge. The Win
ninghams were among the early
settlers of the Rogue River Val
ley and many descendants have
continued to live in Southern
Oregon. Due to the war, many
Winninghams were unable to at
tend, some being in service and
others unable to make the trip
because of traveling conditions.
In past years about 100 have at
tended the annual gatherings.

Visiting relatives and friends
In the valley are Mr. and Mrs.
Gilbert Davis of Cocoli, Canal
Zone. Mr. and Mrs. Davis have
been four years in the Canal
Zone, Mr. Davis being an em
ployee of the government there.
Mrs. Davis is the former Mar
garet Ward and at present she
and Mr. Davis are visiting .her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude
Ward in Talent. They are also
spending some time with Mr.
Davis" parents, who also reside
in Talent.
A number of friends have
been entertaining for the visit
ors and last Monday afternoon
Mrs. R. T. Nichol was hostess
for a tea In Mrs. Davis honor.
The affair was at Mrs. Nichol's
home, 916 Whitman avenue, and
was for a few close friends of
the honored guest.
Catholic Society
To Hold Meeting
Bringing to a close the sum
mer vacation period, St. Anne's
Altar Society of Sacred Heart
Catholic church will meet Tues
day at the parish hall for the
first regular session of the fall.
Lunch will be served at one
o'clock by unit two of which
Mrs. A. Carrara is chairman.
Mrs. L. Rentz is president of
this society, one of the most, ac
tive of the city's church groups.

of honor at a welcoming party
and dish shower given at the
home of Mrs. Garoutte's par
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Fair

honored guests opened the gifts,
the group played Zioncheck
rummy with Miss Dorothy Fair
child winning first prize and
Glenn Fairchild, Jr., consolation
award. Following the late sup
per group singing, with Miss
Fairchild at the piano and Mrs.
Garoutte playing the saxophone,
was enjoyed.

ment, the groom being a neph
ew of Mrs. Yelser. The wedding,
which took place August 26 in
Manchester, M ass., was of
nation-wide interest since the
bride is the daughter of Mrs.
Nicholas Longworth and the
late Mr. Longworth, former
Speaker of the House of Repre
sentatives, and is a granddaugh
ter of the late President
Theodore Roosevelt. She is a
graduate of Vassar College.
The groom is the son of Mr.
