lective service is "far from fin
ished" despite the encouraging
war news, Director Lewis. B.
Hershey said today the armed
forces would continue to call
men up at the rate of about 100.
000 a month until the end of
the year, barring unforeseen
contingencies.
He said in a letter to local
boards that manpower require
ments for the six month period
up to Jan. 1, 1945, would be
about 600,000 an average of
100,000 monthly to be drawn
from these categories: Ages 18
25, 345,000; 26-29, 80.000; 30-37,
55.000: youths reaching 18,
about 210,000, or a total of 690,
000. "At the present time," Her
shey said, "it appears that there
will be sufficient men under 26
years of age to largely fill the
calls for the remainder of 1944.
The armed forces desire these
younger men. Registrants 26
and over who do not qualify for
deferment . . . should readily
supply the balance."
Hershey acknowledged that
manpower requirements had
ben c b a n g e d "considerably"
since the first quarter of the
year, when draft calls were run
ning around 300,000 a month.

The organization takes Its
name from the number of Ore
gon voters who wrote in the
name of Gov. Thomas E. Dewey
for the republican presidential
nomination in the May pri
maries. In the primaries, 1,519 Jack
son county voters wrote in
Dewey's name, and the county
chapter of the club has pledged
itself to reach a membership of
twice that number.
The Jackson County Repub
lican Central Committee, of
which Ralph Koozer of Ash
land is tfhairman, sponsored the
organization of the county chap
ter of the club. Also attending
the meeting was Don Orput of
Grants Pass, state manager and
organizer of the club. Tempor
ary headquarters have been es
tablished at the office of Carl
Y. .Tengwald, Sixth and Holly
streets.

The greatest manhunt in hu
man history is under way across
western Europe today.
Hundreds of thousands of Ger
mans are fleeing eastward on
foot, their panzers smashed,
their transport gone, and death
lurking in every village and
field on the long road home.
They are making a forlorn bid
to get back to Germany but they
know now that it is almost hope
less. An explosion of savage hatred
is being witnessed now in the
liberated countries which, after
four years of suffering under
the Nazi order, are avenging
their martyrdom In blood.
The allied armies have been
augmented by at least a million
men in the form of maquis bands
who stalk the roads of northern
France and Belgium by day and
night, adding to the toll of
enemy lives taken by British
arms.
Groups of Germans are ly
ing in heaps in the country
fields, in village streets and in
the woods where they were shot
down by patriot "white armies."
This is a wrathful uprising of
millions of people who know
only hate for the Germans. The
inexorable hunt continues in the
forests and country lanes, even
while the townspeople in the
liberated areas are welcoming
the British.
This savagery is universal.
Men, women and children join
the hunt. Children rush out of
the woods crying: "Germans are
ii. there," and the maquis go in
to hunt them down.
Griffin Creek Will
Open School Monday
The Griffin Creek school will
open Sept. 11 it was announced
today by school officials. Mrs.
Mema Frink will again teach
the fifth and sixth grades and
serve as school principal. Mrs.
Edith Patton will teach the first
and second grades, Mrs. Jewel
Reed the third and fourth grades
and Mrs. Loma Smedsrud the
seventh and eighth.
Mothers of children in the
district have been busy recently
canning fruits and vegetables
for the school lunch program
this coming year and it is stated
that many more volunteers are
needed to complete the canning.
Peaches, pears and plums are
now being canned, beans and
meats have been prepared for
freezing and tomatoes and other
products will be handled as they
are donated.
Anyone having produce to
donate or who will aid with the
work is asked to contact Mrs.
Ray Guches or Mrs. Harry Wilson.

Enlisted in Waves
Latest young woman in the
Medford area to enlist in the
WAVES is Miss Jean Jeffie Gib
bons who has just completed her
enlistment according to Special
ist Herbert W. Crain, recruiter
in charge of the navy recruiting
substation here. Miss Gibbons is
scheduled to report soon to the
U. S. Naval Training station for
WAVEs at New York city. Fol
lowing six weeks training, she
will be assigned to a naval sta
tion or to an advanced school to
leam a specialized navy job.
Miss Gibbons is a graduate of
Shaker Heights high school,
Ohio, attended Stratford Junior
college, Danville, Va., and Dyke
School of Commerce, Cleveland,
Ohio. Previous to volunteering
in the WAVEs, Miss Gibbons
was an assistant bookkeeper and
stenographer with the American
Red Cross at Camp White. She
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
