KILLED IN CRASH

The possibility that a navy Lib
erator searchplane shot down an
enemy transport carrying six
Japanese admirals was the sub
ject of speculation today on the
basis of enemy broadcasts and
a Pacific fleet announcement of
air action.
The Axis broadcasts reported
that a vice admiral and five rear
admirals were killed by "enemy
action" In the command area of
the Yokosuka naval base which
lies at the entrance to Tokyo
harbor. This command area ex
tends thousands of miles out to
sea and is believed to encompass
the Bonin and Volcano islands.
The Pacific fleet announce
ment Issued reported that a
Liberator searchplane inter
cepted and shot down an enemy
transport plane near Iwo Jima
In the Volcanos on Monday. A
medium bomber escorting the
transport managed to escape, the
announcement added.
The disclosures by the Jap
anese and the Pacific fleet head
quarters came so close together
as to arouse speculation that the
enemy navy aignuanes wer
ed near Iwo Jima.

the house campaign expendi
tures committee today that the
committee on constitutional gov
ernment, of which he Is trustee,
is a non-political organization
devoted to "promoting nation
wide education on constitutional
principles and free enterprise."
He branded as "entirely false"
any charges that the committee
Is in politics and Bald It "does
not in any way come within the
scope of your congressional In
vestigations." Garnett formerly was chair
man of the committee. The
house group's attention to It was
called by Sidney llillman, chair
man of the CIO political action
committee, who said in recent
testimony that any investigation
of the PAC should be enlarged
to take in the Garnett organiza

can Sandys, chairman of the war
cabinet committee on flying
bomb counter - measures, an
nounced today that "except pos
sibly for a few last shots, the
battle of London is over.
His declaration followed an
announcement by the home se
curity ministry that five years
of blackouts would end Sept. 17,
that fire watching would be all
but abolished and that come
guards would be placed on a
part time, voluntary basis.
Sandys said Hcinkel bombers
carrying flying bombs pick-aback,
still would be able to oper
ate on a small scale.
In the 80 days of the flying
bomb campaign against London
and southern England, more
than 8,000 bombs were launched
but 40 per cent were brought
down by defenders, he disclosed.
Twenty-nine per cent reached
the London area and the other
25 per cent went astray.
The record defensive day was
Aug. 28 when 101 robots ap
proached the coast. Defenses
knocked down 97 and only four
reached London, he said.
Sandys revealed that some of
the robots had been launched
from Hcinkel bombers which
carried them over the North sea.

1,800 flying bombs. Sandys for

asked not to send any planes
over an area In Denverton, seven
miles from the airbase, where a
gusher is shooting gas S.000 feet
