Servicemen Leave Budd

ford several days ago by the
death of their mother, Mrs.
Charles R. Gail, have left for
their respective army and navy
rtations. Cpl. Budd Gail left
this morning for Ft. Monmouth,
N. J where he will complete
training with the army signal
corps, and Robert Gail, navy
radioman, left Sunday to return
to Corpus Christi, Tex., where
he is stationed.

Rural residents raiabie to de-!
liver waste paper to the salvage
depot in Medford were urged to
day to bundle it and leave it by
the mailbox for collection by the
mail carrier. Frank DeSouza,
postmaster, pointed out again to
day that all rural and star route
carriers wiii pick up the waste
paper, handling each day what
ever their cars will carry, if it is
properly bundled.
Wayne Jamison, salvage chair
man, repeated the bundling in
structions today, stating that
newspapers are to be laid flat,
as when on sale at news stands,
and tied in bundles about a foot
high. Magazines should be stack
ed in piles about 18 inches high
and cardboard cartons should be
flattened and bundled. All bun
dles should be securely fastened
with stout twine or rope.
DeSouza and Jamison are
hopeful that this plan will result
in a considerable collection of
the badly needed scrap paper,
since there are about 4700 rural
and star route box holders in the
Medford area. Mr. Jamison states
that a considerable quantity of
paper has already been collected
at the old Chamber of Commerce
building on Main street near the
railroad tracks, but he urges
everyone with paper to make ar
rangements for its delivery to
the center within a few days

Labor Day traffic was report
ed to be the heaviest of any holi
day since America's entry into
the war but reports today indi
cated that the death toll was less
than the 250 the National Safety
Council had predicted for the
three-day period ending last
night at midnight
A United Press survey showed
that 164 persons lost their lives
in accidents over the week-end.
Traffic accidents killed 80 per
sons, 31 were drowned and 44
died in other mishaps.
California led the fatality list
with 28 deaths, 20 of them as a
result of traffic accidents. New
York was second with 18 , and
North Carolina was third with
13,
Fatalities reported from other
states included Indiana, 13; Penn
sylvania, 12; Texas and Wiscon
sin, 11 each; Michigan, nine, Con
necticut, eight; Colorado, six;
Missouri, five; and Mississippi,
Missouri and West Virginia, four
each.
As vacationists returned to
their homes and other travellers
took advantage of the last sum
mer holiday in 1944, railroad
companies and bus Sines reported
business nearly as heavy as on
pre-war Labor Days,
