President For Life?
In his acceptance speech last night Senator Truman
based his plea upon experience. Experience, he de
clared, has no substitute.
Therefore as President Roosevelt has had three
terms of experience as President and Governor
Dewey has had none, everyone of course should get
out and cast a ballot for four more years of Demo
cratic administration.
VERY simple!
OUT we wonder why "the able senator from Mis
souri" failed to carry his argument to its logical
conclusion?
They say that is his habit, going straight to the
essence of all Questions.
Perhaps the nature of that logical conclusion and
the fact the silly season has started, that is a presi
dential campaign is on, had SOMEthing to do
with it!
At any rate, if experience in the office of president
SHOULD be the determining factor, then President
Roosevelt should not only be re-elected this year, but
four years from now and four years from then, and
as long as he lives and retains his normal faculties.
Obviously on the basis of experience he would
never have any real competition, except from Herbert
Hoover, and we doubt if that would be considered
very effective competition at this stage of the game.
For of course President Roosevelt would each
election have had four more vears experience than

possible 1,000 plane raids and
the eventual occupation of the
enemy's homeland was envision
ed today by Lt. Gen. Millard F.
Harmon, newly appointed com
mander of U. S. army air forces
In the Pacific, while allied
bombers continued their steady
assault on widely spread targets.
Harmon said Japan faced the
same aerial punishment that
was dealt to the German army
in Europe "if she holds out that
long."
He warned, however, against
over-optimism and expectation
of a quick victory.
"We must count on more than
a year of hard fighting before
the end will be in sight," he said.
He pointed out that the allies
will need new bases to carry
out the mass bombings and sug
gested such places as the south
ern ICuriles, Okinawas south of
Kyushu, Formosa and the China
coast.

Vernal, Utah, Sept. 1 (U.R)
Charles Freeman, Civil Air Pa
trol commander, reported today
that he had landed his plane up
side down in a tree while flying
unconscious. Freeman said he
struck his head on the side of
the plane during a freak wind
storm. When he regained con
sciousness, he was hanging up
side down by his safety belt.
The craft had landed in a tree,
but Freeman was uninjured.

The people, following Senator Truman's advice,
would never replace an EXPERIENCED man with
an INexperienced one, so President Roosevelt would
automatically succeed himself and his successor
would do the same, and so on ad infinitum.
Not exactly the idea of our forefathers who framed
the constitution, but it is, we maintain, the Missouri
senator's main contention carried to its logical con
clusion. Experience For What?
The answer to the above, of course, is that Presi
dent Roosevelt's running mate" was instructed to place
special emphasis upon experience, because in that
held the Republican candidate is weakest and H .U.K.
strongest. Governor Dewey has had no actual experi
ence running a war or running a country, and prob
ably he has never patted Winnie Churchill on the
back or called Stalin "Pal Joey".
There is a perfectly good talking point there, and
the Democrats would be foolish not to take every
vote-getting advantage of it.
RUT, just as carrying this argument to its logical
conclusion would have prevented Franklin Delano
Roosevelt from ever occupying the White House (he
was so INexperienced as a candidate in 1932 that
he promised the people if elected to reduce Hoover's
endless bureaus by half and cut federal expenditures groceryman to have invested
by 20!), .... accepting the argument as of value
particularly as concerns the war and peace, but
applying it realistically to what faces the country not

The man who is elected President for the next four
years will be faced at least three-fourths of his term,
not with problems of war or peace, but with problems
of national retrenchment and reconstruction.
What practical experience has President Roosevelt
had with retrenchment and reconstruction? With any
serious complicated problems of business economy
for that matter? The answer is none, absolutely
inone!
