Rogue Valley Golf Course.
A majority of an expected 80
entrants will fire their 18-hole
qualifying rounds Friday In the
16th annual Southern Oregon
Golf championships at the Rogue
Valley Gold club, with match
play in all flights slated to open
Saturday and continue through
Monday, Labor Day, when title
matches will be staged.
Many local golfers have al
ready turned In qualifying cards
topped by Hobart Price's and
V. J. Robinson's 77s, seven over
par but the bulk of the field
will do their shooting tomorrow.

. Swedish school teacher, added a
victory In the 2,000 meters dis
tance to his record of triumphs
over Gunder Hagg today.
Anderson defeated Hagg by
five meters in the fast time of
8:12.0 yesterday. It was bat
tle all the way, but the final
time was slightly over the
world record of 8:11.8 establish
ed by Hagg on Aug. 28, 1042.
Hang's time yesterday was
8:13.2.

Gudaskas was firmly established
in the starting lineup of the
world's champion Chicago Bears
today as their start guard fol
lowing his brilliant performance
on a rain-soaked field at Dyche
stadium, Evanston, last night, to
defeat the 1944 College All-Stars,
24-21.
He rode the bench as a third
stringer lost year when the Bears
smashed their way to the Na
tional Football league champion
ship, but earned his rating last
night In a drenching rain dur
ing the fourth quarter. Only 10
minutes remained in the final
period of the 11th annual all
star classic when the 27 year-old
guard kicked a field goal from
the six-yard line to give the
Bears their fourth victory and
ono tie in- five appearances In
the series.
Few fans had ever heard of
Gudaskas, who was listed on the
program as a graduate of Mur
ray (Ky.) State Teachers, and a
three-year college football play
er, and very few of the 50,000
spectators cared until the fourth
quarter. They had come to watch
a passing duel between Ens. Sid
Luckman of the Bears and Lt.
Glenn Dobbs of the All-Stars.

during the past two weeks has
produced such a record of medi
ocrity by each of the so-called
American league pennant con
tenders, that not one of them to
day could show better than a
.500 pace for their last dozen
games.
The New York Vankees, who
moved back into second place
yesterday, and the Detroit Ti
gers, each have won six of their
last 12 games, but the league
leading St. Louis Browns have
token only three of their dozen I
while the Boston Red Sox have '

for first division berths and
playoff scries spots tightened

Seattle and Oakland gaining on
the leaders.
Oakland trimmed the league
leading Los Angeles Angels 3-2
while Seattle was knocking off
Sacramento by the same score
in 13 Innings. Hollywood and
